Amazon.com Review

The first disappointment registered with this based-on-the-film game is that it comes with a promotional trailer for the film's sequel, The Mummy II. From there, one goes into a full-motion video scene directly ported from the movie's footage, which is a cheap ploy to try engaging players in the game's action. The game's poorly defined actors look like mutant clones next to their film-based originators.

For those who are unfamiliar with the film, players take on the persona of Rick O'Connell, itinerant foreign legionnaire who travels to Hamanaptra with gorgeous Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan and her sincere but greedy brother, Jonathan; much action ensues. Where The Mummy fails is that it really doesn't extend anything to new heights, and occasionally descends below acceptable levels. Everything in it you've seen dressed up in some other video game.

There are pits, ledges, menacing traps, and such, but the game doesn't ever challenge the player too much. Ammo and power-ups are always pretty handy, though they're sometimes stashed in dumb places. If you conserve your ammo, you can usually get out of most tight spots the first time through. One reason for The Mummy's lack of challenge is the auto-aiming system that reduces common aim-and-shoot action to just shoot.

The Mummy aspires to Tomb Raider status, but does so with one arm and one leg tied behind its back. If channeled exploration, limited puzzle-solving, carnivorous beetles (again!), and scads and scads of shooting float your boat, then climb in. --Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • Fast-paced action with plenty to do and shoot
Cons:
  • Poorly designed character models
  • Uninspired level designs

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Premise (kill Mummies) but a blast and a challenge, May 13, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: The Mummy (Video Game)
I don't play a lot of video games; we bought a Game Cube last year and we have a few games, then we "inherited" my nephew's PS1game and "The Mummy" along with it. My nephew, like most teens, is very prolific at these games, but he got stuck on the 3rd level(caverns of the Nile) when he could'nt make it down the river on the log. I'm in my late 40's with a degree in US History, so I'm drawn to anything even remotely historical. I LOVE this game! Yes, some of the graphics are a little outdated, but games have come a long way on the past 5 years. The weapons, fights, and various settings are very well done, and the music and the many booby traps keep you on the edge of your seat.I have made it through all 16 levels, in just a few months; pretty good for someone with NO game experience at all. If I had more time, I would play it 2 hours a day, every day- but I don't. And for those "reviewers" who complained about it being unrealistic ("I'm sure Egyptologists are killing everyone"), well HELLO! This, like 99% of video games is FICTION! Anyway,if you want a game with a simple premise, lots of action and progressively harder challenges, give "The Mummy" a try. My only regret is that I won't get a chance to try "The Mummy Returns", as it is a PS2 game. If I had a chance to purchase a less-used copy of "The Mummy" I would, as mine is starting to wear out!PS. The 4 or 5 chase scenerios and the 2 trips downriver on logs are an absolute challenge, and a BLAST!

My 9 year old son and husband enjoy this game. Graphics are not very good.We don't think they sound like the real characters either but we find it humorous. We all like the music. You don't have a choice of characters to play with. The game is not real challenging. We liked both movies so they just have fun with the combination of music and levels they are playing on along with some imagination. We rented this game and are now purchasing it. We can think of better ways to improve the game but for now they are just having fun with it.
