Product Description

Product Packaging: Frustration-Free Packaging

Once baby-proofing is done, parents expect and deserve true peace of mind. But not all safety gates are created equal, and closing the gate behind you shouldn't be yet another worry on your list. The auto-close metal gate by munchkin is the ultimate in child gate technology. Equipped with a unique gravity-fed hinge, the auto-close does exactly what its name implies: it closes automatically when the handle is released. And because it relies on gravity, the gate locks shut from any open position. Ideal for use in doorways, stairways, and halls, this infant gate stands 29.5" tall and fits openings 29.5"-35" wide. It's your right hand in baby safety.

They were very easy to install.

For starters, to expand the gate you have to pry some plastic inserts out and then slip them into the expander pieces.
S. Sutton
Once installed, the gate is very sturdy & opens & closes easily with a one-handed unlatch & lift motion.

I have a very large toddler with super strength, 22mos & 37lbs!!! This gate is designed with him in mind. It not only requires the thumb-slide, but a pretty hefty lifting motion to open. He has put his entire body strength into trying to open it and has yet to succeed. The tightening of the pressure against the door frame requires the wrench that is included. I find that it allows you to REALLY install the gate for safety reasons. Other gates have a hand twist tightening and they do not seem to have them same strength as this gate does. I did not have to use extensions for my door width. I also appreciate the actual width of the walk-thru space. We also have a 5mo old baby and trying to walk through most gates without hitting your thigh is tough. This gate has a nice wide opening walk-thru space. This gate is sturdy and dependable, always swings close with a snap. I have other swing close gates and they do not 100% of the time snap shut. I will be purchasing a 2nd Munchkin gate soon for his bedroom door. Big thumbs up from me!

I like this gate so much, I just bought our third one. I am using these for my newly independent, soon-to-be, 10 month old. What I was looking for when searching for a gate was:

- walk through gate: this model has a large walk-through opening when compared to other comparable gates I was considering. It does have a bar against the floor when open that you must step over, but I have had no problems tripping over it, or wheeling the vacuum over it.

- self-closing: love this option as I do not have to physically re-latch gate with arms full of baby, laundry, etc. The self-closing mechanism isn't terribly loud, but you do hear the sound of plastic against plastic with a spring loaded latch snapping into place (bars are metal, but latching mechanism is plastic). If baby is asleep down the hall, I just physically close the gate to minimize the noise; but as another reviewer noted, even when gate closes on own with baby sleeping, it has not caused him to wake.

- pressure mount: gates are being used in a single level home (not at stairs), so I used the pressure mount only option - didn't want to screw into door frames, though having the option for additional security (particularly for stairs) is a plus in my book. I have found that the pressure mount option keeps the gates securely in place (no moving) even when the baby pulls up on the gate.

I hope this is helpful; when I saw that this item only had about 3 1/2 stars, I decided I needed to write a review as these have been an excellent option for my family!

We have been using this gate for about 3 months now. We placed it at the bottom of our stairs to keep my (now 15 month old) son from crawling up the steps - a feat he was absolutely determined to accomplish every hour of the day until we got the gate. Ours is an old home with uneven door frames and walls. Because of this we needed a gate where each connection could be adjusted individually. With this gate, it was easy to make a very tight fit using just the pressure mount hardware (but it comes with additional hardware to screw it into the wall if you prefer). I can grab the gate by the bars and shake it really hard and it does not budge one bit. I am very confident in the locking mechanism, too. While eventually I know my son will figure out how to slide the safety latch, I know it will be a long time before he will be tall and strong enough to also lift the gate up to swing it open.

Like previous reviews have noted, it does make a loud clang sound when it locks back into place. This has never bothered me as I appreciate the reassurance that it has closed properly behind me. If you slow it down as it is closing, you can prevent it from clicking back into place, which we often intentionally do after the baby is asleep at night. The bar across the bottom of the gate along the floor has not been an issue.

Another feature I love about this gate is that in using one of the two provided extensions to fill our approx. 35" opening, I used the top and bottom extension pieces but left out the vertical bar. This created an opening wide enough for our cat to pass through (just under 5" wide) but it is still WAY to skinny for our baby to move through or get stuck trying.

We have three of these gates (and have had them for almost a year now) so I can safely say that this is a fairly good product. However, there are a few issues with them, some smaller and one which is pretty big. So here are some of the pros and cons based on our experience:

Pros:
- Sturdy metal frame,
- Fairly straightforward to install (no tools are really needed beyond the little wrench enclosed, but a flat screw-driver and a rubber mallet may help)
- Comes with two side fences, so it can accommodate all manner of openings,
- Can be mounted either by hardware (i.e. screwed into the walls) or held in place by pressure/friction,
- Auto-close feature,
A note on pressure installation: Simply using the provided hardware (the screws with the round plastic ends) will not work well pushing against dry-wall. At the pressure required (about 100 lbf) to keep the gate in place, those round things will make holes in the wall. My solution was to get some pieces of trim ($0.99 each) from Home-Depot/Lowe's (see Figures 1 and 3 uploaded up-there) and use those to push against the wall. These pieces of trim do have a little bump sticking-out in the middle (they are ornamental trim pieces after all). That bump needs to be removed so the plastic ends on the mounting screws sit flush in the round indentation on that piece of trim. Those pieces of trim have an area almost ten times larger than the plastic ends on those screws, so there is considerably less pressure on the dry-wall, hence no holes in the wall. On mounting against the railing of stairs or other slick surfaces you need to use the enclosed double-sided sticky tape. That will prevent the gate from "walking" away from its proper position with continued use.
