Two things that bother me: 1) you have to take the time to ensure the lid goes on straight and not at an angle, otherwise the "no spill" thing goes out the window and 2) if you put cold milk inside and screw the lid closed as the milk heats up to room temperature it rises through the straw due to the change in pressure (the way a volcano works) and can create a small mess. I usually open the lid to release the pressure or wrap a napkin and saran wrap around the tip of the straw if it will be packed in bag.
Other than those minor inconveniences I really like this sippy and my daughter does too.
In any case, while exchanging dad war stories at work one day (his involved something cool; mine involved sippy cup woes), a coworker nonchalantly said "you need a straw sippy," as if it was the most obvious thing. When I got home, I read that straw sippies often work better for the young'uns because the straw resembles a nipple. Well, wouldn't you know, when we ordered these straw sippies, our son chewed on the straw instead of sucking on it. This persisted for a couple of days until it finally just clicked. He now sips his young'un beverages all by himself! It's a miracle (for us, at least). What I've now learned is that it's maybe not an actual miracle but the fact that these straw sippies have a different mechanism to prevent spills--a lock mechanism instead of a no-leak valve. For us, that has made all the difference. Also, with the straw sippy, he doesn't have to tilt the cup; he can hold it below him just like you would with any straw-containing beverage and the liquid comes out fine.Read more ›
