fresh foods and convenience,
By SCC (Arizona) - See all my reviews

This is an incredibly useful product. We use it with our 7 month old, and he can feed himself fresh fruit and vegetables. Apples and pears work best. Carrots give him something to chew on, but he doesn't get very far. Bananas are his favorite, though they are the messiest and hardest to clean up--the riper the banana the easier it is to clean the mesh. The nicest part is that he feeds himself! One tip: we use a pacifier clip to keep him from throwing it on the floor.

California's prop 65 warning!!!!,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Munchkin 2 Pack Fresh Food Feeder, Colors May Vary (Baby Product)
After i ordered and paid for this item, in Amazons order summary confirmation email, there was a warning that one or all of my 12 items may be subject to California's Prop 65 law, but it didn't tell me which one- annoying. I had Amazon call me and got great customer service from a guy who looked up every one of my items and found that this was the one subject to Prop 65. He sent me a return label so i could send it back for a refund on their dime. great service!
Prop 65 makes manufacturers tell consumers (in california) that there are potentially harmful/toxic substances in their products. Needless to say, i was shocked that this would be in baby gear especially from Munchkin, as they are usually bpa-free etc. So, be warned, as this is the last thing i would put in my baby's mouth!

Great product,

We love these things! I usually keep one loaded up with a banana in the freezer for a teething day treat. We use the other one for afternoon snack. I actually want to buy a couple more packs so I can keep 2 or 3 in the freezer.
Like one of the other reviewer's said, pears and apples work pretty well. In my experience, a frozen banana seems to clean off a little easier than regular banana. Some cleaning advice: You have to rinse this thing immediately after use for best cleaning results. It's not a big deal and there's no way around it, but man! This is messy fun for baby! :)

Completely overrated and totally unsafe!,

I purchased this item from a target near home. after reading all the rave reviews about it i was super excited to test this out with my little one. I put some apple in it and he didnt seem to like it so i figured it was a bad idea to start with apple.. and went to switch to banana however when i opened the clasp i pulled out the apple and noticed there was blue plastic embedded in the apple like another reviewer mentioned!!!!
I paused and figured maybe i didnt clean it enough.. so i did that for a long time.. but the fibers would still come out of the seam under pressure... so i tried biting it myself to see if maybe the bits of plastic would stay put or pass through the mesh.. and they came out of the mesh!!!! i was so frustrated. i would definately NOT recommend this to anyone.. even if it is only "a little bit of plastic" i personally dont think its safe and think that they should remove the seam altogether.

Sheds Plastic,

We had misgivings about letting our baby chew one of these, but we finally gave him some apple in the Munchkin feeder. When we removed the apple from the mesh bag (when he was finished), we noticed pieces of blue plastic embedded in the apple! The pieces were small enough that they could have gone through the mesh. I don't know how much plastic our baby ate, but we certainly won't be using these anymore!! Unsafe at best.

Pretty good but hard to clean,
By Susa Bella (Germany) - See all my reviews

I think this is a great concept but I find it very hard to clean. Banana is almost impossible to get out. All the fibers of the banana get stuck in the seams and it is so hard to get out. I ended up cutting the extra mesh around the seam hoping it would help a little. I put them in the dishwasher, use a scrub brush, etc but there's always something left. And then it gets dried up in the mesh and flakes off but is still stuck in those darn seams! Maybe I just need to use firmer fruits and veggies and leave the banana for finger food.
Kind of a hassle but baby loves it and I can give her a little "appetizer" while I am getting her meals ready.

Good, but "Baby Safe Feeder" brand is better,

I used the Baby Safe Feeder brand (they are the original inventors of this product) with my first child and we LOVED it. She loved it, too. In addition to it allowing her to learn to feed herself without the danger and fear of choking, it allowed us to eat a meal without stopping a million times. It kept her totally consumed for about 30 minutes. When I saw this version in the store recently, I bought it for our second child. He's just as enthusiastic about it as our daughter was, but I find the Munchkin design lacking. The clasp is too hard to get open, even before it has slimy food all over it. Cleaning is difficult, too, especially where the mesh meets the handle. So I ordered the Baby Safe Feeder brand again (www.babysafefeeder.com), and it's great. It's so much easier to open because it unscrews (although my child has never been able to open it, as some others have complained about) and it's easier to clean because the mesh bag comes completely out and you can get into the crevice that fits into the neck of the handle. To clean it, I use a dish brush on the exterior of the bag while a baby bottle brush is on the inside of the bag. Works great. Even with cleaning bananas (the messiest and my son's favorite!). Both feeders are great products, but I definitely prefer the original.

Our son liked squishing banana out of this, however it only gets one star since it's impossible to clean quickly. Baby products must be easy to clean fully or they don't get used. Preferably they should easy to take apart and load in the dishwasher. I stood over the sink for 10 minutes plucking banana fibers from the mesh. That's a nightmare scenario for a baby feeding tool.

Great for introducing foods and for teething babies/toddlers,

We got this for our daughter when she was 8 months old. They had just come out with this brand and it was a lot cheaper than the alternative brand. It is so simple to clean and none of the pieces come apart. The other brand you have to screw together. My daughter bangs it around everywhere and it never pops open. Whatever we're eating we can put in there and she just munches on it with no choking risk at all. And when she's teething I throw some frozen fruit in it and she loves it. It's amazing how much frozen fruit in this thing can stop the screaming of a teething baby. She has teeth now and can't chew it apart, or pull pieces of string off of it or anything; it's very sturdy. Even though she doesn't need it anymore because she eats solids with a fork and spoon now, it was extremely helpful to have and well worth the money.

Too difficult to TOTALLY clean. Get the "Baby Safe" version,

With each baby, I bought this product by Munchkin. The first time I threw it away after 2 uses, realizing that after all my efforts some food had stayed around the ring. The second time... I forgot which product I'd purchased. I threw it away after one use. A couple of weeks ago I bought the "Baby Safe" version also available on amazon and I love it! Ok, it too requires some special effort to clean but it breaks down in a way the munchkin doesnt allowing better access to the ring for cleaning AND allowing replacement 'mesh' Buy the 'starter pack' with 2 rings and 2 extra mesh. Love, Love it. The whole family can sit at the table to eat and when I need my hands for myself, my son has the Baby Safe Feeder and jsut about any juicy food I want to put in it.
