PreS–A multilingual guessing game for the youngest children. Each spread begins with the question, "What kind of animal says..." and features a variety of sounds in playful handwritten typefaces. Opening a flap reveals the answer. Several languages from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are included, as well as the sound in English to tip off youngsters. Bigda's cotton-candy-colored gouache artwork displays a lightness of line and a jazzy, free-form feel that blends well with the simple fare. The pages of onomatopoeic sounds are bright and artful (at least to someone able to read them) but young audiences may wiggle impatiently to open the flaps. Hank De Zutter's Who Says a Dog Goes Bow-Wow? (Dell, 1997) covers the same theme in a more straightforward and linear approach. Pair Park's fun title with Miriam Schlein's Hello, Hello! Illustrator: Diane Bigda has illustrated many yummy cookbooks. "Mung-Mung" is her first children's book. Diane lives in Massachusetts.

I love this book... I bought for my first grandson when he was less than a year old (he is now 6). I read it to him often and also to his sister (who is now 3 1/2)... I have purchased several more copies in the last year to give as a welcome baby gift as well... I love it for the early exposure to many cultures and languages.

These happy animals are a nice pairing with the fun that can be had making all of the animal sounds. A great read along.

What a neat idea! The concept that animals "speak" differently in different languages might be a little hard for a toddler to grasp, but is fun and interesting nonetheless. However, the illustrations and page layout are such that the text is lost. There's nowhere for the reader's eye to rest, and certainly none of the bold, immidiately visible and easily identifiable images that small children delight in.
