Book Description

January 4, 2010
“Fascinating . . . vividly recounts one of the most tragic true stories to emerge from the Iraq War . . . eloquent, disturbing, and haunting.” —Mark Boal, journalist and screenwriter of The Hurt Locker and In the Valley of Elah

Army Specialist Richard T. Davis seemed to be a survivor. He had been in Bosnia, reenlisted in time for the invasion of Iraq, and made it through the bloody, savage battle known as the Midtown Massacre. When his father, a career army officer, received a call stating his son was AWOL, he knew something was terribly wrong.

And it was. On July 14, 2003, within hours of Davis's return to Fort Benning, Georgia, he had been mercilessly beaten and murdered. His body was set on fire and left in the woods. The army did not open an official investigation into the missing soldier until September, and his remains would not be recovered until November. Four members of his own platoon were arrested for the crime. When one of them was asked why they had set Richard on fire, his answer was both bone-chilling and revealing. He said, "Because that's the way we got rid of bodies in Iraq."

Murder in Baker Company is a journey to uncover the truth about what happened to Richard Davis. Using court transcripts, personal interviews, and police records, Cilla McCain traces the events of the case and, in the process, provides a disturbing, eye-opening look into today's military. Soldiers are handed antipsychotic drugs and sent into battle. Treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder is stigmatized. Gang members carry their affiliation from the streets to the barracks. And many of our soldiers are forced to face down two separate enemies, one in the same uniform they wear.

Murder in Baker Company is not only an exploration of the heinous murder of one of our soldiers, it is also a warning and a call to action for American citizens.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

McCain, a writer who grew up on army bases, takes aim at the military and the ways soldiers bring the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq home with them. In recounting the murder of 25-year-old Army Specialist Richard T. Davis by four fellow members of the army's Third Infantry (a case that inspired the movie In the Valley of Elah), McCain examines the tragic results of the increasing number of street gang members recruited into the army, post-traumatic stress, and noncombat deaths of soldiers resulting from accidents, illness, suicide, and murder. When Davis returned home to Fort Benning, Ga., in July 2003 after serving in Iraq, he was driven by four other soldiers to a wooded area, murdered, and his body set on fire. When Lanny Davis, a Vietnam veteran, attempted to find out what happened to his son, he confronted coverups, military red tape, and, finally, an incompetent investigation. McCain sifted through government paperwork, police statements, court transcripts, and firsthand interviews. The result is a raw and compelling overview of a shocking killing, its aftermath, and a military ignoring its soldiers' needs. (Feb.)

Review

"This work has been created with an insightful heart and an activist's drive. Cilla's writing denotes a deep sense of personal responsibility for the veterans of the Iraq War and it is from this platform that she advocates and encourages the reader to feel the same." —Paul Haggis, writer/director, Crash, In the Valley of Elah, Million Dollar Baby, and Quantum of Solace

"With eloquence, determination, and passion, Cilla McCain has dared to tell the world a story that must be told, a story that the powerful do not want to be told and that the prosecution and defense withheld from the jury."  —Mark Shelnutt, criminal defense attorney

More About the Author

Cilla McCain writes full-time, focusing on issues dealing with social injustice. Cilla's first book is a probing investigation of the killing of Army Specialist Richard Davis by his own men, and the growing number of suicides and unsolved murder cases involving our troops that followed.

Although this story has received international media attention, including a 48 Hours episode, and served as the inspiration behind the Paul Haggis film, In The Valley of Elah, until now, no source has come close to revealing the full details of this case.

This review is from: Murder in Baker Company: How Four American Soldiers Killed One of Their Own (Hardcover)
Through impressive research, Cilla McCain unravels a complex story that goes well beyond the true-life murder mystery of one American soldier. She deftly draws the reader in as she uncovers disturbing truths surrounding the brutal murder of Army Specialist Richard Davis. From the first report of Richard being AWOL, through the ensuing investigation and murder trial, these elusive truths that had haunted Davis's father, prompting him to launch his own investigation into his son's murder, are fully discovered by McCain and meticulously revealed. We learn the frustrations and struggles he faces in this determined life's mission are shared by a growing number of families of American soldiers who have died in other troubling noncombat situations.
Entwined in this many-faceted story is a disquieting awareness of serious problems faced by today's military, from recruitment through care provided our battle-scarred young heroes. McCain presents her discoveries with skillfulness and compassion and without indictment. This thought-provoking story touched my heart and is highly recommended.

First, Lannie Davis is my brother-in-law. When Lannie was at his home here in Missouri, he was only two miles away and my wife (his sister) and I spent many hours with him getting updated on the investigation of Richard's murder and all the new information gathered and how the process was going. This with all the additional information received from the various media sources, we thought we were well informed. HOWEVER, as my wife puts it "It is like he (Lannie) is speaking to us". There are a lot of things mentioned in the book that we were never told and information that not only helped fill in all the blanks, but gives us a new view or picture from several different angles. Not only is the book well written, but it gets out the message loud and clear. The GOVERNMENT and MILITARY from the lowest levels to Washington, DC are still trying to sweep all their DIRT under a rug that can't hide the stink any more. Lannie wanted to let the world know, as he has shown, one person can make a small difference, but with the help of a few others, a BIG difference can be made for the good of all. We only hope each of you will carry this message on and use it as a guide to help you is your situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CALL TO ACTION - READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!, March 2, 2010
This book is a must read for anyone who truly wants to help our soldiers and their families during times of tragedy. So many of our soldiers are making it home from war only to be murdered here at home. That is wrong on every level. The investigation surrounding the murder of Specialist Davis was an insult to everyone who wears a uniform. The civilian authorities helped the military to hide the fact that this murder was a long time in the making and nobody did anything to stop it. They hid PTSD, they hid the drug use, they hid the problems with Lariam. They knowingly allowed one of the soldiers involved, who had dangerous mental problems to be deployed and then when he told them he was a danger to himself and his fellow soldiers, they still did nothing. And this is just the beginning!! Murder In Baker Company also proves that this is not an isolated case. That is something that we should all be terrified of!!!Write to your elected officials, send them a copy of this book and demand they takes steps to get these issues under control!!
