Book Description

MURDER BEHIND THE SCENES is a detective novel set in Victorian England. In 1857 a young actress called Emily Broughton leaves London to join a provincial theatre company in the seaside town of Handford. She finds a company full of petty rivalries and eccentric actors, but it is also a time of great excitement as American star Ira Douglas is about to make a guest appearance at the theatre.

Emily is soon befriended by the theatre’s wealthy patron Euphemia Pelham, but it emerges Miss Pelham has an ulterior motive and is not as respectable as she seems. After a new acquaintance is poisoned, Emily is forced to investigate the shocking murder of her friend when she herself receives anonymous letters, seemingly from the murderer, threatening to reveal compromising secrets from Emily’s own past.

Murder Behind the Scenes is a full length mystery novel and is 100,102 words (the print edition is 328 pages). Isabella Macready is a pen name. She has previously published one novel and two biographies of historical figures.

5.0 out of 5 stars authentic setting, great read November 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Isabella Macready sets the stage of her Victorian mystery in fascinating detail. Macready's plot is fast paced with enough twists and turns to keep her readers guessing, and her humorous treatment of her protagonist, Emily, gently pokes fun at the egos of provincial stage actors.

More Macready please!

This book was an entertaining mystery with good character development. The culprit at the end had me guessing all the way up to the last chapter. If you enjoy period mysteries then you will enjoy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entrancing March 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As an Agatha Christie, the author places Emily at the seaside summer theater with her secret and other mysterious background histories. An unexpected climax done well with a fascinating summary. The development of the characters and actors builds and rounds out the historical setting.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok but... July 5, 2012

It is a good story, but feels like it is a first draft rather than a polished finished product. Things seems to end hastily or abruptly, as if the writer intended to come back to them later. She gives broad strokes but no details, like she forgot to come back to them. But, it is a good mystery. Emily Broughton is a flawed character, which is a nice change from Nell Sweeney or Sarah Brandt, who never seem to think badly of anyone or have any real jealousies or selfishness. I liked that Emily wondered why the hell no one realizes she is the second coming to theatre. And that she is jealous of the lead actress and talks before she thinks. I like Nell and Sarah, but Emily was a pleasant change.

5.0 out of 5 stars Among the Better Kindle Historical Mysteries May 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There is a tendency for the historical mystery to lean too heavily in the direction of Romance, subordinating the mystery element to a negligible component. That is not the case in this fine book. An interesting set of characters is created to interact with a heroine whose virtues and f,aults are made clear by the author. She is not one of paper machete young women who people too many of these novels, but a live person, who, yet, has the impulses and semi-mature personality of someone on the cusp of twenty. The theatrical setting is well done though limited in scope; not a novel of the theater but a novel with the theater as backdrop. The author writes well, the plot is interesting and historically sound (in terms of the definitions of appropriate male and female roles in the period), and the characters act in dramatically logical ways rather than being forced to behave as if robots responding to mysterious impulses with no reason behind them.
For those with a taste for this genre, and those who want to chance it, I can recommend this novel.( I see no evidence on Amazon of a successor novel nor that this will be the first in a series. Hopefully, this one will draw the readership which will encourage future adventures of this young person.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Early Victorian Mystery December 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this novel to be very interesting right from the beginning even though it wasn't until about one third into the story before someone finally gets murdered. The characters and dialogue seem real as does the time setting and attitudes of those times. There is no love interest, just Emily plodding along, despite the restrictions placed upon women of that era, to solve the murder and unravel other mysteries that pop up.

Emily is independent minded but is not a "modern woman" per se. Many authors place the liberated attitudes of today's women into their 19th century heroines. That always imparts a false note to my way of thinking. That was not done here.

It is a good murder mystery. Every time I would start to suspect one the the characters as being the murderer, Emily would also start to suspect the same person a few pages on. That would get me thinking that I was on a false trail but I could never be sure. It certainly kept my interest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Murder behind the scenes
A very different way of writing for that era, I guess the writer had researched the theatre business, but I was intrigued
as it seemed so much closer to 20th century.
