4.0 out of 5 stars "he was well known among the brothels of the Barbary Coast as the young man who 'at a certain point' would decapitate a rooster", January 14, 2009
John Marr's Murder Can Be Fun zine is a delightful treat to those interested in the darker side of life or fans of obscure true-crime.

Issue 9/10 (I have no idea why it is called 9/10) is not John's best issue (#13 "Death at Disneyland" is my personal favorite), but it's still a good issue. It starts out with a not too exciting 5 page article about the rise of The Carpenters and Karen's death. Next is the highlight of the issue: a 6 page story about William Henry Theodore Durrant who killed two women in 1895 San Francisco and left their bodies in the Emmanuel Baptist Church - one in the steeple! Marr digs up some interesting tidbits about the case including some very funny rumors.

Next up is an interesting 6 page article about the 1912 book "The Kallikak Family" by Dr. Henry Goddard who follows the dual family tree of a Continental soldier who knocked up a "feeble-minded girl" in 1776 and then a few years later when he married and raised a family with "a Quaker girl of a good family". The "normal" side produced prosperous, intelligent, and morally upstanding citizens while the other "feeble-minded" side produced "high-grade morons" some being "imbeciles of the Mongolian type". LOL. Also included in the article is J. David Smith's 1985 "Minds Made Feeble: The Myth & Legacy of the Kallikaks" which argues against Goddard research gathering and paints him as a prejudiced charlatan.

Rest of the issue:

* a weak two page article about going undercover at a Rev. Ernest Angley "Luncheon and Miracle Healing Service". It could have been interesting, but it wasn't.

* a 3-page comparison of some large true-crime encyclopedias

* a 1 page review of "The Evening of Eccentric Performances" - Mckenna Theatre, San Francisco State University, 6-8-88

* a very boring 2 page review of a magazine called "Spy"

* 3 pages of book reviews (most being very rare or probably out-of-print. The one about snake handlers looks good).
