Book Description

November 1, 1991 0810824639 978-0810824638 annotated edition
For the first time, here is an annotated bibliography of murder mysteries that is organized by the category of the mystery and lists only contemporary publications, including an extensive listing of titles that are paperback originals.

Categories range from Academic, Getting Away with Murder, and Old Crimes and Murders to Writers and Their Conventions. Because an interesting annotation should be available for reading, contemporary publications were chosen. With the exception of a few favorites, each entry was in print in either a paperback or a hardcover edition in 1985, and listings continue through late 1991. Murder... By Category is the companion to take for library and bookstore browsing.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Mackler's "selective" guide arranges some 1800 mysteries in 90 categories. Each entry includes publication information, a sprightly annotation, and, as appropriate, series notes and cross references to other categories. Mackler concludes with lists of British women writers, female detectives, award winners and nominees, and other reference works, as well as an author index (the last three features not seen). She emphasizes mysteries "readily available," with 1985 as the starting year for inclusion, but lets in lots of oldies--including some from the 1920s! Whether for reasons of currency or personal preference, however, she excludes the very best modern mystery writers: Belgian Georges Simenon (1903-89) and the Swedish team of Maj Sjowall (b. 1935) and Per Wahloo (1926-75). Though this may be intended as a guide to recent mysteries originally published in English, nothing in the introduction indicates that this is so. Genre addicts may enjoy Mackler's guide, but librarians will finds its inconsistent coverage frustrating.
