Book Description

September 2007
It's Christmas, and Phryne has an invitation to the Last Best party of 1928, a four-day extravaganza being held at Werribee Manor house and grounds by the Golden Twins, Isabella and Gerald Templar. She knew them in Paris, where they caused a sensation. Phryne is in two minds about going when she starts receiving anonymous threats warning her against attending. She promptly decides to accept the invitation - after all, no one tells Phryne what to do. At the Manor, she is accommodated in the Iris room, and at the party meets two polo-playing women, a Goat lady (and goat), a large number of glamorous young men and a very rude child called Tarquin. The acolytes of the golden twins are smoking hashish and dreaming, and Phryne finds that the jazz is as hot as the drinks are cold and indulges in flirtations, dancing, and mint juleps. Heaven.

It all seems like good clean fun until three people are kidnapped, one of them the abominable child, and Phryne must puzzle her way through the cryptic clues of the scavenger hunt to retrieve the hostages and save the party from disaster.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

Phryne Fisher is again having a high old time in 1920s Australia, solving crimes, almost getting herself killed, and definitely getting herself into a few liaisons. As always, Stephanie Daniel understands the mix of tight writing, clever plotting, and sheer frivolity that make Kerry Greenwoods series so enticing. In this installment, Phryne attends the last best party of 1928, where three guests are kidnapped and a murderer lurks. Daniels reading of Phryne is commanding, sexy, and clever. The secondary characters, from debauched English lords to orphaned children and hearty laborers, also sound exactly right. Finally, the flapper-era music introducing each chapter adds to the charm. One could have listened forever. A.C.S. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

but it's still one of the best mysteries you'll read, part of one of the best mystery series ever written.

to really appreciate this book, it would be best to have read others in the series. this will prepare you for phyrne's character and abilities.

the events take place at 'the last best party of 1928', in australia. the cast, and list of possible suspects, is large, the motives obscure, the plots multiple, the solutions brilliant. the party activities amazing.

there is humor of several sorts, suspense, fascinating historical information, and, best of all, one of the greatest female fictional characters of any genre. the writing is superb, the dialogue witty.

mystery fans should love this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars what a party, May 4, 2009

This review is from: Murder in the Dark (Paperback)
At the end of 1928, the Hon. Phryne Fisher is invited to the "last best party" of the year, a four-day extravaganza paid for by two of the "beautiful people." Unfortunately, with apologies to Batman and Robin, a murderer known as the Joker is planning to spoil the gaiety.

Phryne was wavering as to whether or not to accept the invitation, but after receiving warnings not to attend, of course she does. And it turns out to be quite a shindig, replete with all kinds of musicians, polo, games and costumes, differing each night along with the cuisine. Of course, where Phryne is, death threats arise, not only against her life, but that of the host as well. Phryne to the rescue.

This volume marks the sixteenth published in the United States, each a pleasure to read. Phryne is a thoroughly modern woman, even though she lives in the Jazz Age.

Recommended.
