It's been four years since Evelyn David's last book in the Sullivan Investigations series, although in the books themselves, it's only been a few months. David brings back the familiar cast of retired cop turned private investigator Mac Sullivan, his office staff, JJ and Edgar Freed, his friends from O'Herlihy Funeral Home, including Mac's girlfriend, Rachel Brenner, and of course, Mac's true partner, his Irish Wolfhound, Whiskey. Murder Doubles Back is my favorite type of mystery, a cold case. In this story, it's a ten-year-old cold case with one of the most surprising turns I've seen in recent mysteries.

For the past ten years, Mac Sullivan has been receiving postcards every year with just one line, "Where's Amanda Norman?" Now that he's retired with his own PI agency, he's surprised the postcards followed him to his new address. Ten years earlier, Sullivan investigated a missing person's case. Amanda Norman, a fourteen-year-old, disappeared on a class trip to the Smithsonian. She was a foster child, in a new school, and no one, from foster parents to schoolmates, knew much about the girl. Now that Mac had his own business, he decided to try to find the answer to that question, "Where's Amanda Norman?"

One simple question about a cold case, and it would turn Sullivan's life upside down. It asks a question that had haunted him for ten years. Now, everyone in Mac's life would be drawn into the search, in unexpected ways. Twice, Sullivan himself is the victim in incidents as he searches for answers. Sullivan's investigation turns deadly as bodies pile up, people who were related to that original search for a missing girl.

David's story involves the search for answers, and some of those answers involve relationships.

Not only does 'Murder Doubles Back' but so do cold cases as Private Investigator, Mackenzie Sullivan and his Irish Wolfhound partner find out.

For some unknown reason Mac keeps receiving annual postcards regarding a missing person's case from a decade earlier. The case remains unsolved and Mac has always regretted it. Who is trying to keep the case alive and why? After all, a decade makes it likely the missing person is dead by now, and since it was a child...?

Mac soon learns that he isn't aware of the background of the ones he has grown a family of...JJ, his assistant, Edgar, the senior citizen, Rachel, his steady girlfriend (have they gone on a date yet???), Jeff, funeral parlour owner and best friend, even fellow police officers...are they whom they seem to be? No.

This book keeps you in suspense throughout the entire novel. Murders, kidnappings, stolen pirate treasure, identity theft, car chases, stake-outs and cookies...what more can you ask of this gripping novel?

A true murder mystery, this book has me eagerly awaiting the next installment. Luckily for all of us, you can purchase this Title and others in the series by Print, ebooks, etc. Do read the series in order as the characters develop greatly and their backgrounds are vital. It is a great stand alone, but, I did enjoy it more 'knowing' the main persons involved.

When private detective Mac Sullivan retired from the police force, he left behind the unsolved case of a missing teen--and someone won't let him forget this case is still unsolved. Mac decides it is time to finish what he started and begins to investigate this cold case. Mac's investigation takes a hit when he is confronted by a major betrayal. Should he continue his investigation or just walk away?

Murder Doubles Back is a great addition to this entertaining and fun series. All the characters I have come to care about are back--Mac, Rachel, J J, Edgar, Jeff, Kathleen, and Mac's dog, Whiskey. Each character plays an important role in this story, and I love how Mac finally realizes that he may not be related to these people, but they are still family.

Having read and enjoyed the first two books in this series, I was thrilled when I found out a third book had finally been published. I hope Evelyn David plans another Mac Sullivan adventure--soon!!

All of Evelyn David's books have been excellent. They are murder mysteries with an enjoyable sense of humor throughout. Their characters are well defined.
