A Great Soundtrack To A Great Movie!,
By Dell "Chris" (Connecticut, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Murder in the First (Audio CD)
MITF is by far my favorite movie ever, and listening to this soundtrack lets me experience the movie when I can't watch it, like when I'm driving or fishing. The music compliments the film perfectly. It sets the mood, and it is haunting and powerful. Sometimes, I put the soundtrack on, and in my mind, I'm Kevin Bacon, bravely struggling against the inhumanity of Alcatraz. It uplifts me.

I loved the movie when I saw it years ago, but as soon as it ended, I knew I had to find the music. It remains one of my favorite soundtracks, and is enjoyable even if you've never seen the movie. Much of the score, with the exception of "Movietone News" and "Suitcase Sally", has a consistent theme, but it never feels repetitive. It's a shame this isn't more widely available; it's worth tracking down!

Purchased this to send to my mother in Scotland as she had just watched the movie and was more taken by the music throughout...beautiful soundtrack and very hard to find.

I Didn't See the Movie...,

...but the music is fantastic. This is definitely a 20th Century Romantic Classical score, closer to Vaughan Williams as in smooth & flowing sadness but not Rachmaninov as in heavy handed depression. Sorry Rachmaninov, that's an over statement because I love your music. As you can see I have to be careful when I write "20th Century Classical Music" because it could mean anything. Maybe that's the problem in trying to explain movie theme music when it takes a classical form...the music is more expressive or...of coarse it tries to explain a scene which true classical music need not do. I like the first review where the author writes he can see the movie when he plays the CD. I didn't see the movie & rarely see movies these days, so I can't picture the scenes, but the music does take you on a journey. Most of the music is calm & beautiful with a full orchestra with either a choir or at times a solo violin. I am surprised that the inner notes doesn't name the choir nor the solo musician...why, not even the orchestra!!! There is a "Special Thanks To" listing, I wonder if this contains any of the musicians? There are some "Movietone News" like what one would hear in 1950 to 1960 movie theaters, which take on a marching band style. I wonder what would of happen if these where not in the CD, then could this be classified as classical music? Therefore if or if not you have seen the movie it doesn't mater. This is a great score.
