(VINE VOICE)
Charlie, a literary agent and only child, thinks her mother, Edwina, is being peculiar. Edwina Greene is a professor of biology in Boulder. She is serving as a technical advisor.

The setting of this mystery is high desert country. There are two film crews present-- one for a documentary, the other for a weird show for network television. In the Hollywood pecking order, the second group is more important. Edwina is driving everyone bonkers through her fussiness.

A homicide causes the sheriff to order everyone, Charlie included, to remain in the area. Notwithstanding her guilt over being an unwed mother, Charlie loves Edwina. In this tale she is called upon to be resourceful for the sake of Edwina who is the prime suspect and is jailed pursuant to the murder investigation.

Subsequently there are more unexplained deaths and a trip on the Colorado River to heighten the reader's interest. The characters of the story are described in colorful terms and the writing is pert.

It was okay. Not one of the best that Millhiser has written, but not bad.
