THE SOUTHERN SISTERS SERIES IS THE BEST AND YOU SHOULD NOT MISS THESE EIGHT BOOKS,
By
This review is from: Murder on a Girls' Night Out: A Southern Sisters Mystery (Mass Market Paperback)
OK, OK, I am reviewing all eight books in this one sitting! Anne George wrote a series WINNER with these eight books. You need to read them in order and they are as such --
MURDER ON A GIRLS NIGHT OUT MURDER ON A BAD HAIR DAY MURDER RUNS IN THE FAMILY MURDER MAKES WAVES MURDER GETS A LIFE MURDER SHOOTS THE BULL MURDER CARRIES A TORCH MURDER BOOGIES WITH ELVIS I have lent these books out to so many friends/family that they are in need of repair. These books should be read in the above order. Unfortunately, Anne George has passed on, so this is it for this series. You will LOVE every single book. The main characters are two sisters who could not be more different than day and night. Mary Alice weighs two hundred pounds and the word flamboyant does not even begin to describe her. People who know and love her call her Sister. She is loud, border-line obnoxious, and into getting married - over and over again. She is someone you would adore in real life. Her sister, Patricia Anne, is a retired school teacher and the more serious of the two women. She is lovingly known as Mouse. She has been in a steady marriage for years, has grown children, and is the more sensible of the two. You will love them both. The books are set in Alabama, so the books are full of Southern flair and charm. The characters in each book are funny, sad, sweet, nasty -- you will meet a whole cast of characters in each book. I cannot emphasize enough how much you should treat yourself to these eight books! Each book deals with a murder mystery that these two senior girls just seem to keep falling into. I know, I know, the titles sound hokey and so does the preface of the books, but they are WONDERFUL. I read all eight of them in a row and was sad to see them come to an end. Each book deals with another mystery and caper. The trouble these two old ladies get into! The laughs are there, and they will have you laughing out loud. The mystery is just that -- mystery. You will not know which way the book is headed. Each book is full of surprises and keeps your attention the entire length of the book. Get this entire series and set yourself down. Enjoy! Thank you! Pam

Fun Debut Novel,
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Murder on a Girls' Night Out: A Southern Sisters Mystery (Mass Market Paperback)
Mary Alice (Sister) is excited when she bursts in on her sister Patricia Anne (Mouse) to announce that she's bought the Skoot 'n' Boot, a local dance bar she's been enjoying going to. But her excitement turns to horror the next day when the previous owner is found murdered in the establishment. Vowing to stay out of it, Mouse keeps getting drawn in by various people, including one of her former students. Things get personal when the killer starts making threats. Will these sisters be able to figure things out? This is a fun, cozy book. The pace is slow and steady with plenty of time given to the sister's antics, yet I never got bored with the storyline. I often found myself chuckling at a line or scene, and a couple times laughed out loud. The two sisters are very different, but what could have been caricature was capably turned into character development by the author. The rest of the characters filled their rolls quite well. I'm looking forward to getting to know these sisters and their family and friends better over the course of the series. This is a fun debut that promises great things in the books to come.

Refreshing and hilarious,

This is the first in a series set in the South, with two sisters who couldn't be more different. The dialogue is a riot, and the rapport between the sisters is very realistic. The plot is interesting and credible as the sisters stumble onto several murders and try to get themselves out of a crazy situation. I couldn't wait to read each chapter, and I look forward to the other books in the series. This is highly recommended.

Deadly Doings in Dixie,
By Dennis Phillips "The Book Friar" (Bulls Gap, Tennessee USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Murder on a Girls' Night Out: A Southern Sisters Mystery (Mass Market Paperback)
Patricia Anne and Mary Alice are sisters but there the similarities end. Patricia Anne (Mouse) is a sixty-year old retired schoolteacher who has been married to the same man (Fred) for forty years and she weighs one hundred and five pounds soaking wet. Mary Alice (Sister, Aunt Sister to Mouse's children) is sixty-five, weighs two hundred and fifty pounds and has outlived three husbands. Mouse is well grounded, tries to eat a healthy diet and always votes Democratic. Sister is flighty, claims that Mouse doesn't eat enough and always votes Republican. The fertile mind of Anne George dreamed up this pair, put them in position to solve a mystery and neither Alabama or the mystery world will ever be the same again.
Sister and her boyfriend Bill are into line dancing and when the owner of their favorite honky-tonk decides to sell Mary Alice decides to buy. The day after the sale closes however the former owner is found dead in the bar's wishing well and from then on Sister's investment is jinxed. The sisters don't really set out to catch the killer but instead are trying to help a former student of Patricia Anne's who is a suspect in the crime. The more they delve into matters though the deeper they find themselves and before it is all said and done one of the sisters finds herself on the wrong end of a gun. Since this is the first book in the series it is easy to assume that the endangered sister survives but you'll never guess who saves the day. As with most cozy mysteries the characters tend to overshadow the plot and the hero figures don't actually solve anything but just sort of blunder into the solution. The characters are so much fun though that you will hardly notice when the plot happens to disappear. Seldom does a book like this make me laugh out loud but this one did the trick and the plot held just strongly enough to make me rush toward the end once I approached the climax of the mystery. As a born and raised Southerner I could clearly visualize these two and could actually identify them with several of my own family members, right down to the double first names. So pour yourself a nice glass of sweet tea and settle down on the veranda for an unforgettable visit with these two Southern ladies extraordinaire.

FUN AND HILARIOUS!!!,

Anne George is one of the best writers in the mystery genre. Her books are not only entertaining and fun, but you walk away believing Patricia Anne and her sister, Mary Alice could walk right into your living room. This is a refreshing change from the dark mysteries that have been hitting the shelves lately - where characters you have come to love are murdered in the last chapter, or the mysteries that have so much international espionage in them you would need a degree in political and military science just to enjoy them. Thanks, Anne George. (Write faster!)

Murder On A Girls Night Out is another hilarious work of the great southern writer, Anne George. I can relate to her descriptions of Birmingham and the surrounding area, an excellent read! The author is an inspiration to all of "us" southern authors. Thanks for the inspiration.

Murder Made Fun.....,
This review is from: Murder on a Girls' Night Out: A Southern Sisters Mystery (Mass Market Paperback)
Meet Birmingham's sixty something southern sisters...that's big (250 pounds of woman), flamboyant, three times widowed, Mary Alice (Sister) and her petite and proper, retired English teacher sister, Patricia Anne (Mouse). All the trouble started when Mary Alice decided, on the spur of the moment to buy a country western bar, the Skoot 'n' Boot, because she and her main squeeze of late, have been into line dancing and the Skoot's the place to be. Patricia Anne thinks her sister has lost her mind, but has to admit the joint has appeal and real possibilities. That is, until the former owner is found murdered and hanging in the establishment's wishing well and the Skoot is completely ransacked. Now, as their curiousity gets the better of them, they're drawn into the case and these two aging belles aren't stopping until they get some answers..... Anne George has written a lighthearted mystery full of southern charm and humor. Her writing is crisp, with a talented ear for dialogue, her plot, entertaining and her scenes, true to life and laugh out loud funny. But it's Ms George's wonderfully quirky and engaging characters that make this novel stand out and once you've met the southern sisters and company, you'll be hooked, for sure. This is the debut of a terrific series that just gets better with each installment. So, travel to Birmingham, meet the ladies, dive right in and read them all. You won't be disappointed.

Offbeat heroines and fun and hijinks in Alabama,
By
This review is from: Murder on a Girls' Night Out: A Southern Sisters Mystery (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first in the Southern Sisters cozy series. I found that Patricia Ann and Mary Alice are fun people to get to know. They are different as they are both "sixty-something" southern sisters. The humour is light and the other characters are fun to get to know. But I found the mystery somewhat confusing. The plot seemed to jump around a bit, and the murder wasn't actually solved, it was allowed to play out and a series of coincidences were what solved the case so to speak. This is a first book though, so maybe this will improve with succeeding books. I am certainly interested enough to find out.

Get These "Girls" to Take You Out!,
By Mamalinde "mamalinde" (Dallas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Murder on a Girls' Night Out: A Southern Sisters Mystery (Mass Market Paperback)
You've got to love the 60 & 65 year old sisters who are polar opposites, I particular think the dialogue and writing is way above the norm. "Mary Alice giggled. She's 65 years old but she still giggles like a young girl. And men still love it." .... "`Nice,' I said, feeling a slight slip in my personal reality cog." And the audio book a PERFECT marriage of reader and material - I couldn't wait to go to my car, and then didn't want to reach my destination. From the first lines of this story, which I listened to in unabridged format, I knew I'd found something special. Anne George manages to touch on just the right formula of family dynamics and occasional insanity, with sisters Patricia Ann and Mary Alice. The rather convoluted plot takes second stage to the wonderful personalities and characters and the craziness we all have in our families. From sperm bank babies to aging hippies, mother/daughter issues, and the lovably annoying spousal unit - I'm real excited there are more Southern Sisters books!

Murder at the Scoot is a Hoot,
By Carol Peterson Hennekens (Colorado Springs, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Murder on a Girls' Night Out: A Southern Sisters Mystery (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked up this book expecting two twenty-something sisters solving hard-boiled crime. Was I ever pleasantly surprised to meet Patricia Ann and Mary Alice - sixty-something and full of humor and curiousity. They're Birmingham, Alabama steel magnolias who are definately nineties ladies. If you like Diane Mott Davidson's books, you'll like these ladies. There are plenty of laughs (particularly if you are close to any sixty-plus ladies) and enough mystery to keep the reader interested. This review is based on the Recorded Books unabridged tape which is narrated to perfection by a Ruth Ann (who must be Patricia Ann's soul sister). |
