Book Description

Charlie Greene Series, 3 December 1998
A horror film director gets the ax--literally--and the menopausal mother of Hollywood agent Charlie Green becomes the prime murder suspect. To clear her mom's name, Charlie teams up with hunky movie star, Mitch Hilsten. Soon the two sleuths are forced to deal with wild river boat rides, cliff-hanging--and even more dead bodies. Can they find the killer? "Charlie's best outing yet."--Kirkus Reviews

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In her action-packed third adventure, (following Death of the Office Witch), high-spirited Hollywood literary agent Charlie Greene tries to help her mother, biology professor Edwina, and ends up tangling perilously with murderers, environmentalists, desert rats (human and rodent) and superstars in the Utah desert. Edwina, consulting on a documentary, has come to blows with a director who is shooting a science-fiction film nearby. She's also at professional odds with the producer/director of the documentary. Charlie agrees to talk to the documentary director at the film site where she meets the handsome movie star (and active environmentalist) who is narrating the documentary. When the SF director is murdered and Edwina is arrested, Charlie and the superstar team up to find the real killer, in the process becoming cliff-hangers (they're rescued by helicopter) and setting off rumors of romance. More murders and a series of chills and spills fitting to the rugged terrain follow. Even better, however, is Millhiser's accurate and often hilarious limning of the treacherous territory between mothers and daughters, Edwina, Charlie and Charlie's teenage daughter. Author tour.

From Library Journal

Dr. Edwina Green, biological consultant for a documentary being filmed near Moab, Utah, and vehement proponent of the environment, feels ignored by her director. So she calls in daughter Charlie Green, a Beverly Hills literary agent (see Death of the Office Witch, LJ 11/1/93). Charlie feels put upon until someone kills the ecologically blind director of a neighboring commercial film crew and the sheriff arrests Edwina. Suspense arises from revelatory subplots and from frequent descriptions of natural surroundings, including Edwina's local animal friends. Short, lively paragraphs, likable protagonists, and wry humor make this a hit.

(VINE VOICE)
Charlie, a literary agent and only child, thinks her mother, Edwina, is being peculiar. Edwina Greene is a professor of biology in Boulder. She is serving as a technical advisor.

The setting of this mystery is high desert country. There are two film crews present-- one for a documentary, the other for a weird show for network television. In the Hollywood pecking order, the second group is more important. Edwina is driving everyone bonkers through her fussiness.

A homicide causes the sheriff to order everyone, Charlie included, to remain in the area. Notwithstanding her guilt over being an unwed mother, Charlie loves Edwina. In this tale she is called upon to be resourceful for the sake of Edwina who is the prime suspect and is jailed pursuant to the murder investigation.

Subsequently there are more unexplained deaths and a trip on the Colorado River to heighten the reader's interest. The characters of the story are described in colorful terms and the writing is pert.

It was okay. Not one of the best that Millhiser has written, but not bad.
