5.0 out of 5 stars terrific Savannah Reid who-done-it, February 4, 2005
When the sleuthing business or a stakeout is at a lull, private investigator Savannah Reid passes the time reading steamy romance novels. Though she insist she reads the books, her friends believe that she only buys novels to gaze lovingly at the cover picture when Lance Roman is the model. Her friends Ryan Stone and John Gibson know about her fantasy so arrange as a birthday present for Savannah to be a contestant on a reality show in which the prize is Lance.

Savannah wants to win the prize badly and makes every effort to use her southern charm on Lance. However, her endeavor takes a back seat when someone kills a show's producer Tess with fudge ice cream as the murder weapon; the body is left in a freezer that could only have been loaded by a Texan. Savannah begins investigating the homicide even as she continues to play the Georgia peach with Lance.

This is a terrific Savannah Reid who-done-it as the heroine combines her sleuthing skills with her southern charm to impress her fantasy lover. The entertaining story line grips the reader as Savannah cannot resist the lure of a murder investigation or the lure of the cover model. Fans of the series will enjoy her latest binge while newcomers will get a taste of one of the better continuing female private investigators on the market today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Savannah meets her romantic kryptonite..., November 18, 2006
I fell behind on the most recent Savannah Reid murder mysteries, so I picked up a couple at the library the other day. The first one I read was Murder a la Mode by G. A. McKevett. It's like meeting up with an old friend and realizing how much you missed them...

Reid is between investigation gigs, and things are somewhat slow. But life gets infinitely more exciting when she's given a last-second spot on a reality TV show staring her favorite romance novel hunk, Lance Roman. It's a medieval setting where five women are trying to outlast each other to get "The Man Of My Dreams". All the other contestants are the skinny bimbo model types, and Savannah decides that she'll just be herself with her full figure and Southern common sense. But things take an immediate strange turn when the nasty wife of the production team is found murdered in the basement. There's no lack of suspects, as no one much liked her. But the husband's grief is short-lived, as the show must go on. That is, until a gargoyle falls from the castle wall and nearly kills another contestant. Then there's the sword accident that takes out a third... While Savannah is still weak-kneed around Roman, she and Dirk (her former partner back in the cop days) have to try and figure out who is killing everyone, as well as what the motive might be. And the list only gets shorter when someone else ends up injured or dead...

The fun thing about a Savannah Reid novel is the characters. Savannah is a southern belle who is quite comfortable with her body size, but takes no grief from anyone. Dirk, her friend and sometimes partner, is the typical clueless guy who is good at his cop/detective job, but doesn't have much of a life outside of that. The Dirk/Savannah relationship always seems to be on the edge of crossing over from best friends to lovers, but to date it hasn't happened. There's also a nice plot twist thrown in at the end that takes you in a direction you didn't plan on going over the last few pages.

Overall, a nice escape from reality for awhile, and a lot of fun in the process...

5.0 out of 5 stars Reality TV at it's best., November 15, 2006
Murder A La Mode was the first (and certainly not the last) Savannagh Reid books that I have read. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series. A friend turned me onto this series and I am glad that she did. Savannagh is the embodiment of a confident, beautiful, funny and often spunky Southern bell. When she is not running around solving mysteries, you can find her cooking something yummy for her 'bottomless pit' partner Dirk. This book was a fun blend of mystery, colorful characters and reality television gone awry. I thought this book was very clever and I enjoyed the reality television aspect as I am a reality tv junkie. I'm not normally a mystery type person but I had a blast reading this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knights and ladies...and a mystery to boot, December 16, 2005

the setting is a medevil castle, but that doesn't seem to affect Savannah any, nor her cast of regulars that make up the dectetive agency she runs. Fans of G.A.McKevett will not regret reading this one, and if you aren't a fan when you start this book you will be by the end.

It was a good book...especially to be read in between others that required a little more thinking...was afraid it was going to be too romance-y, but it wasn't!

All in all, a great quick read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Murder by Killer Fudge Ice Cream?, February 4, 2011

When Savannah Reid is gifted with a last-minute spot on a reality show with her dream hunk, all she can think of is the hunk and the diamond tiara that she can sell to pay bills with. Once at the medieval castle, where the show is being shot, things start to fall apart. Besides the cat fights between the contestants, there's a murder. If that weren't enough, 2 of the contestants are seriously hurt. Savannah, being a former cop & a PI is instantly put to work, trying to solve the crime, with her side-kicks, 2 gay former FBI agents, a perky associate and her former partner in the police department.

I got this as a freebie, from Amazon, but it's a cinch that I will have to get the rest, as this is a fun, read. There's lots of action, but it's light-hearted and funny.

I had just finished reading The Help, and wanted something light to counter balance it. I downloaded Murder a la Mode to my Kindle several months ago when it was free, and decided to give it a try. I found it to be an enjoyable light mystery - perfect as a summer read and perfect after reading something so heavy. I will probably buy a few of the other Savannah Reid mysteries now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read, April 10, 2011

An appealing main character carries this book along, and wins the day. The setting and premise of the plot are interesting and amusing (sort of "The Bachelor" in a faux-gothic castle), and the writing has enough of a spark to keep you interested. Not by any means a weighty tome, but a lot of fun and I will be looking for more Savannah Reid stories.
