5.0 out of 5 stars Nancy's having cold problems!
I have read this book many times and it is one of my favourites! Nancy is going on a holiday with her two best friends and her boyfriend Ned. But even before she's got an opportunity to try the skiing, she's in another mysterious mystery. And upon all this, her friends are falling in love with two of her main suspects! (Not Ned of course, he is always on her side.) There...

Nancy, Bess, George & Ned trip to Webb Cove Lodge for a vacation of skiing... and romance. But the owner, Liz Whitcomb, has other plans. Hearing that Nancy is a detective, she tells Nancy of a stalker she's seen by night at the window peering into the lodge. Nancy promises to keep an eye out. Especially since the ski instructor, Luke, seems shady. Nancy, Ned and the others fall into possibly fatal injuries. Everytime it gets worse... can Nancy find the culprit before they leave too much blood in the snow banks of the blizzard?

4.0 out of 5 stars Nancy stumbles upon yet another mystery., June 17, 1998

This review is from: Murder on Ice (Nancy Drew Casefiles, Case 3) (Paperback)
Nancy is on a case. She went to Vermont for a relaxing holiday with her two best friends and her boyfriend Ned. But suddenly she's sucked into yet another mystery; a prowler at the ski lodge where she's staying. And George and Bess are in love with two possible suspects! Bess has fallen for the seemingly nice, and innocent, Gunther while George is head over heels for Nancy's number one suspect, Luke, the handsome but mysterious ski instructor. And now someone is trying to stop Nancy, whatever the cost. Can she solve the mystery and protect her friends? You better hope so! This is my favourite Nancy Drew and I recommend it to everyone.

The "Nancy Drew Files" in a nutshell: moving Nancy from the 1950s to the 1980s, updating the settings and characters into mysteries that are more action-orientated. Much is lost in the translation: Nancy is a bit bland in this series, and the charm of the old books in regard to the 1950s atmosphere is gone. As such, although the original series is timeless, the "Files" already feel horribly dated, what with several descriptions of 80s fashions and hair-styles. Still, if you need to kill a few hours, you could do worse than these diverting little mysteries, all of which could probably be read in one sitting.

Something can be said for the characterization of Bess, George and Ned in this series, who are not simply "sidekicks" anymore, but often have their own storylines. Furthermore, their relationships with Nancy are no longer static (they can have disagreements or squabbles with our heroine, and often long-suffering Ned finds himself getting tired of coming in second to Nancy's cases).

"Murder on Ice" is one of the better stories in the series, largely thanks to the snowy atmosphere of a Vermont skiing lodge and the dread that comes with being cut off from the world when a blizzard hits. Nancy and her cohorts travel to Webb Cove Ski Lodge for a romantic getaway, only for the owner Liz Whitcomb to ask Nancy for help: she's been frightened by a nighttime prowler on more than one occasion and would like Nancy to investigate. The girl-detective is more than happy to help out, but gets rather disconcerted at a series of dangerous accidents that seemed to be aimed at her, and that someone has spelt out the words "Murderer" in the snow.

There's an interesting lineup of characters and suspects: the unfriendly ski-instructor Luke Ericsen who always seems to be on the scene when the accidents occur; Michael Price, a friendly stranger with a familiar voice who saves Nancy from an accident, and Gunther, a German exchange student. Complications arise when George falls for Luke, and doesn't take too kindly to Nancy treating him as the main suspect, resulting in George keeping back important information from her friend.

There is a good blend of detective work and action sequences, an interesting motivation to the mystery (which is based more on personal secrets than the usual money, extortion or blackmail deal) and no awkward resolution in which Nancy gets tied up and the baddie monologues about how the crime was done. Instead, it's a satisfying conclusion that wraps up all the loose ends, making this one of the better installments in the "Nancy Drew Files".

5.0 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew, September 24, 2008
The Nancy Drew Files
Murder on Ice
Carolyn Keene

Nancy Drew books have always one of my favorite things to read. They are very entertaining and keep me wanting more. Murder on Ice is by far my
favorite Nancy Drew book. I love the way it flows and I never got
confused about what was going on. Nancy Drew had gone on a ski trip with
Ned, Bess, and George. She met Liz, the ski lodge owner, and she said
there were some suspicious activities going on. So it was up to Nancy
again. I like how the story's plot is, and how everything seems so
normal, but then something happens to change it all. The events that
happen almost seem real. I can always picture what's going on. And I
almost feel like I'm there with her.
