Linda Evans gives a respectable reading of this first Inspector John Sanders mystery (1986), which begins as a conventional serial killer police procedural. It becomes complicated when copycat murders and murder attempts begin, and Sanders, with the reluctant assistance of his friend Eleanor, has a number of different perpetrators to identify. The narrative point of view switches frequently in the novel, so while one naturally roots for the good guys, the listener does not develop a close attachment to any of the characters. This is also a challenge for the reader. As you might expect, Evans does well with the feminine characters?especially Eleanor and Amanda (a teenage victim). Evans adds flat vowels and introduces a husky undertone when a man is talking?but, unfortunately, none of the men sound very attractive. The plot and the narration are likely to appeal more to women than to men.
