Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

At the start of Menino's gripping mystery debut, horsewoman Tink Elledge comes across a horse van that has overturned and burned on a road near her farm outside Philadelphia. The state troopers at the scene inform her that the van's human occupants—Joe Terrell and Patty McLaren, both of whom work for a rival stable owned by Win Guthrie—have been taken to the hospital. Tink persuades one of the troopers to shoot the injured horse trapped in the van. Later, Win phones Tink at home to say Joe died in the accident. But was it an accident? Meanwhile, Tink has a horse running in the forthcoming Brandywine Three-Day Event. Since a recent injury prevents her from riding, Tink allows Alejandra Delgado, the girlfriend of her favorite stepson, Stephen, to ride in her place. Money and drugs soon figure into the action of this exciting insider's view of the elite horse world. Menino is also the author of Calls Beyond Our Hearing: Unlocking the Secrets of Animal Voices. Agent: Ethan Bassoff, Lippincott Massie McQuilkin. (Aug.)

From Booklist

The world of U.S. eventing, a type of triathlon for horses and their riders that is filled with athleticism and artistry, comes to life in Menino’s debut novel. Over three days, the horses go through dressage, cross-country racing, and stadium jumping. The titles of the three parts of this novel—“The Test of Brilliant Obedience,” “The Test of Speed and Endurance,” and “The Test of Agility”—provide a perfect means of showcasing the trials that both competitors and the main character, Tink Elledge, confront in this three-day span. Elledge, a longtime, nationally ranked event rider, has been sidelined by a nerve injury. On the way to an event, he witnesses a horrific horse-trailer accident that kills one of the top horsemen in the East. Then a young rider disappears. Elledge is in prime position to solve these seeming accidents, uncovering much that is rank at the base of all this beauty. Menino’s work (at this point) lacks the taut suspense of Dick Francis, but this debut uncovers a fascinating subject and a promising writer. --Connie Fletcher

The best -- the very best -- thing about this book is the approach taken by the author, i.e., to use the each of the three days in an eventing meet as sections of the book. For those of us who have been riding for decades, it was fun to meet a heroine who's not only immersed in the world of horses, but sensible enough to stay off when need be. There were none of those glaring errors that sometimes occur when a "wanna be" horse person writes a book. Clearly not the case here! The plot may not have been as tightly developed as one might like, but the characters were, and that seems to be a great start to a series!

Well researched , good character development , anyone who events or lives in the vicinity of Chester County or Fair Hill will, identify with the book.
Small discrepancy involving the administration and use of a well know drug is only mar on a book really accurate in terminology for a change.
Hope to see Rink and Charlie again...

Clever horse mystery centered around believable adult characters with an accurate depiction of the horses and the world of Three Day Eventing. I can hardly want for the next one!

I've read this book and the second Tink Elledge mystery and I'm becoming very attached to the characters in this series. What will they get up to next?? I can't wait for the third installment. I'm not a horse person but I absolutely love the finely-wrought descriptions of that world. A sophisticated thriller with social awareness worthy of a Masterpiece Mystery series.
