Book Description

Murder She Wrote April 4, 2006
Jessica Fletcher is in the Berkshires attending a writers’ conference at a historic mansion where her friends the Savoys are hosting a murder-mystery party. As both a crime solver and a mystery author, Jessica is an old hand at this kind of thing. So she swears to the Savoys that she won’t reveal the secrets of their play and goes about enjoying the weekend with her colleagues.

But when a young actor’s murder scene appears all too real, no one can tell what’s scripted and what isn’t. They say the show must go on, but everyone is wondering: Who really dunit?

From AudioFile

Nothing is more intriguing than an old mansion, a snowstorm, and murder. And narrator Cynthia Darlow adeptly portrays Jessica Fletcher, New England accent and all. Anyone who has enjoyed the television series Murder, She Wrote will love listening to this whodunit. A wide variety of characters spend a weekend at a historic mansion, where the hosts put on murder mystery. Guests are challenged to find a make-believe killer. Meanwhile, a real murder is committed, and the suspense heats up. Darlows ability to portray so many characters is outstanding and makes it is easy for listeners to get caught up in the story. 2.0 out of 5 stars Please get your facts straight, Mr. Bain, June 29, 2007
This review is from: Murder, She Wrote: A Question of Murder (Mass Market Paperback)
The back of the cover states that the story takes place in the Berkshires. Anticipating a story set in western Massachusetts, the location of the Berkshires, I was surprised to learn that the author actually set the book in Connecticut.
At the beginning of each chapter, the author asks a question about a mystery writer. One of the questions is "which author features cats and dogs in her books? The answer is not Lilian Jackson Braun, but the author says that is the correct answer. I get very annoyed when people write books but don't bother to look up the facts. If you don't want to be factual, then use a fake setting, and don't ask questions that have real answers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why the long faces?, March 2, 2008
This review is from: Murder, She Wrote: A Question of Murder (Mass Market Paperback)
The two negative reviews for A QUESTION OF MURDER must have been from people who had had a bad day. I will admit, however, that a few loose ends need to be tied up at the conclusion. No big deal. At least, in my eyes. Aside from those unanswered questions, I thought the story was chock-full of mystery, and fun to read; a nice escape from reality. Jessica Fletcher in the Berkshires, during an evening of theater, secret passages (my favorite scene in the book), and quirky characters and red herrings. What else can you ask for? I tell you, mystery reader, pick up this MURDER SHE WROTE adventure and give it a whirl. I guarantee you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jessica Gets Trapped in the Snow, May 8, 2006
This review is from: Murder, She Wrote: A Question of Murder (Mass Market Paperback)
Donald Bain has turned out another highly entertaining entry in the "Murder She Wrote" series and in some ways this entry is the best so far. I do however have a couple of problems with this book and would prefer to get my objections out of the way in short order. The first problem that I found is a common problem among Yankee Americans who are attempting to be cute with Southern accents. Mr. Bain, y'all is a plural word and should never be used in the singular. This is a grammatical sin that the author commits several times in this book and I hope to never find this error in any of his future books. The second problem is an ongoing occurrence in this series and that is Jessica's obvious dislike of fat people. Although her friend Seth is rather plump she never fails to take a dig at any other fat character that shows up in these stories and if she uses the term corpulent one more time I think that I will scream.

That said I must say that this was one of the more enjoyable books in this series. Very seldom is it possible for Mr. Bain's readers to solve the mystery before Jessica does but in this case it is quite doable. There are the usual twists and turns in this story and one must pay very close attention but all of the clues are provided in this case which is a policy that I wish Mr. Bain would hold to more often.

As usual Jessica is a delight except of course when she is picking on fat people and the rest of the characters are an intriguing bunch to say the least. Most interesting is Jessica's fellow mystery writer from New Orleans who puts the ghosts that she sees into her stories but she is also unfortunately the one who goes around saying y'all in the singular. Another mystery writer is also on hand for the murder mystery weekend at this historic Berkshires hotel and he fills the shoes of the character one would most like to see murdered. Add in a real police inspector who is working his first murder case, the fictional Deputy Dolt, an old hotel with a lot of secret passages and a fierce snowstorm and you get a highly entertaining book. In fact, among the books in this series that do not feature the Cabot Cove gang this is probably the most enjoyable.
