Format: Hardcover
In Cabot Cove, Maine, Olympic Gold medalist Bruce Devlin trains promising figure skating pair Christine Allen and Russian Alexei Olshansky. Christine does not like either male as her coach is a demanding perfectionist who rejects anything less than the best; her pompous partner believes he is Russia's gift to the American female population. Still at the Cabot Cove Ice Arena she endures both as they are her platform to success in skating pair competition.

However, accidents begin to occur with a frequency that makes local Dr. Seth Hazlitt feel they are deliberate. Soon afterward Alexei is murdered and another skater Jeremy is hammered into a coma. Sheriff Mort Metzger and novelist Jessica Fletcher investigate Skating on Thin Ice.

After the mostly recent road tour (see A Slaying in Savannah, Madison Avenue Shoot, Queen Jewels and Nashville Noir), Jessica returns home to Cabot Cove where she investigates the Alexei homicide and related felonies. Her being back in Maine is a two edged sword as that locale has been the prime place for the myriad of books and the TV series, but also brings a deja vu feel to the plot. Still this is an engaging whodunit in which readers will never look at a Zamboni in the same way.

I love the Murder She Wrote books that take place in Cabot Cove. Fall and winter settings are my favorite. I think this was a well written book with plenty of suspense. I just wish there were less books where Jessica is abroad and more in cabot cove. Good read!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful By T.B. Grant TOP 1000 REVIEWER on July 25, 2011
Format: Hardcover
The latest `Murder She Wrote' novel, set in Maine's fictional idyllic town, Cabot Cove, is a meandering whodunit in the ongoing mystery series.

And for many reasons:
The resolution, for example, is a bit of a stretch, with implausible scenarios and an unmoving confession by the killer.

But let's rewind to the beginning, where the story opens with mystery writer, Jessica Fletcher, and her friend and Cabot Cove's physician, Dr. Seth Hazlitt, discussing Jessica's return to the ice rink--as a skater (Another implausible scenario, trying to place the character on the rink. It doesn't work). Moreover, chapter one is in no way an awful opener for a mystery book. But the lack of suspense, particularly throughout the novel, while trying to grip the reader, seems to slow down the story. In other words: too much dialogue and description; not enough action.

That said, the first 104 pages, or ten chapters, is mostly an account of the goings-on in the sport of figure skating. The author sprinkles the pages, sparingly, with clues, culminating to the formulaic showdown between Jessica Fletcher and the killer, but even the trail of clues are suffocated with too much filler (i.e., the description of someone's costume, which sounds more like a L.L. Bean ad, and background on the insignificance of a character's life). None of this advances the plot of the story, which, at times, makes you want to roll your eyes in disbelief.

This series is beginning to remind me a lot of the old "Cat Who..." series - it seems to be the same old, same old over and over again - with each book getting progressively worse.
The dialog, settings, characters - they all seem recycled from previous novels.
With that being said, this book isn't "bad", but it's not a book you have to really focus on while reading - I guess in a word: Hollow
I'm not entirely writing this series off, it's a good summer read if you're stretched out on a beach, but it's not a novel you can sink your teeth into and lose yourself in either.

Used book arrived in good condition. Usual "Murder She Wrote" style. Light reading that keeps you guessing till the end. This one was not as interesting to me but that's life.

Good book. All the books by these authors are good. Have been reading them for years and enjoy them very much. Only problem is I am running out of books to read by these authors.
