Format: Paperback
I'm a fan of Agatha Christie (though not one blind to her shortcomings), and I had never heard of the stage version of "Death on the Nile" until I came across this play. It's not the same as the 1978 filmed version (which I think is very good) or the one done in TV's "Poirot" series. Like those others, this is based on the novel "Death on the Nile," but Christie made significant departures from the novel in writing this play. Most notably, she eliminated Hercule Poirot from the script. I feel his absence. Other differences, such as the combining or elimination of several minor characters, don't matter much; and the truncation of the plot and narrowing of the focus were necessary to an efficient staging. But Christie also makes several changes in the plot to make the solving of the crime by a non-professional more realistic; these have the surprising effect of making the story, and its solution, more hard to swallow, and less satisfying. Lastly, she changes the outcome of the story, which is almost as bad a mistake here as the change of the climax of "Witness for the Prosecution." If, like me, you'd never heard of "Murder on the Nile," pass it by without regret. You've missed nothing.
