Ex-cop Jack Dwyer is back again, he is working as an actor in a small theater production along with an alcoholic has-been called Stephen Wade. Their director (Michael Reeves) is a ruthless man and one night Wade is thoroughly drunk during a performance and it is a flop. Reeves angrily fires Wade and there is a brief episode of fisticuffs. Reeves is subsequently found stabbed to death and Wade is at the scene of the crime right after it happened.
Dwyer immediately doubts that Wade is guilty so he launches his own investigation and he delves into the actions and past of the wealthy family that is a heavy contributor to the theater. There is a great deal of dysfunction in that family and they have help from others in creating their problems.
This mystery was not as good as other Gorman books, the climactic scene where Dwyer and his girlfriend Donna are locked in an attic and threatened with murder ends with a thud. The best aspect is the repartee between Dwyer and Donna; it involves everything from menstrual cramps to unlikely suspects and irrational jealousy. There are several amusing points, which saves the story, for the mystery does not build a great deal of tension.
