A Good Locked Room Mystery,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Murder in the Gunroom (Kindle Edition)
This is H. Beam Piper's sole surviving mystery novel, Piper being largely known for his science fiction output. It's a traditional "locked room" mystery, taking place between WWII and the Korean War. Piper was a gun collector of some note himself, so the background, relating to a valuable gun collection, is quite authentic. (Remember throughout to multiply 1948 prices by 10 or more to get a feel for the amount of money involved.)
It's not great Piper. Great Piper is science fiction. And it's not a locked room on the level of John Dickson Carr. But it's a good solid mystery and I'm glad to own it. The Kindle edition has no obvious errors compared with the printed text.

If you are a gun enthusiast, a must get,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Murder in the Gunroom (Kindle Edition)
This is a murder mystery set in the post WW II USA.
The main character's name made me chuckle "Jefferson Davis Rand". Almost expected him to unleash the One Power on the Union. Anyway, if you have any interest in guns, this is the mystery for you. I think I learned more about old guns in this, than in anything else. It feels like a classic gun scholarly paper, with a murder wrapped around it. Watching the main character engage in what we would call insider trading was interesting. As well as the references to the NRA. The story really felt like it was part of a series, so I was quite surprised to read that this was the only story written by the author. Feel like an opportunity was missed. If you like a bit more "hardboiled" of a mystery, give this a try. Get the free Kindle version.
