I saw this game at E3 of last year, thought it looked pretty interesting, then forgot all about it until it came out. I was going to wait until the price went down, because I had heard mixed reviews about it. I bought it for $25 bucks off of Ebay, and don't regret it one bit. I'll go over the gameplay aspect, but also the PC version side of it as well. I also think that with most of my reviews, rather than peppering the things I don't like in the different sections, I'll just save everything that I don't like for the end, so that you know what I'm talking about.

Gameplay and Story: Gameplay is incredibly intuitive, but not what you would expect. It is a very laid back, calming game. There isn't a lot of action, and when there is it comes in short bursts. As I've read on other reviews, this is a thinking man's game. And, as I have been more of an intellectual versus athletic person, it fits my type of game perfectly. I haven't finished the game yet, I would hazard a guess that I'm about 3/4 of the way through, but so far I have really enjoyed it.
What the game consists of is walking around crime scenes, collecting evidence and slowly picturing together the scene, with each investigation leading you closer to solving your murder, which is the entire point of the game. There are some little side investigations, helping lost souls "find their purpose" for still being on earth even though they're dead. They provide a little bit of depth to the world, but nothing crazy.

Sound and Dialogue: The sound is pretty standard as far as games go, it's not a spectacular soundtrack but the music fits the mood and always sounds good. The voice acting isn't amazing, but it doesn't suck either. Pretty standard.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, that's about it June 18, 2014

The story in this game is the only thing bumping it to a 3 star rating. Otherwise, I'd probably give it 2.

Story: 4/5
So the game's about Ronan, a detective who gets killed while trying to catch a serial killer named "The Bell Killer." Upon death, Ronan wakes up in ghost form where he can see living people but they can't see him. The exceptions are mediums who can interact with both the living and dead. A teenage girl named Joy is one such medium and she sets out with Ronan to find her missing mother Cassandra, who is also a medium, and may be the Bell Killer's next target. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that the story's pretty interesting and original (at least for games) and leave it at that. The only thing that kept me from giving the story a 5/5 is that Ronan's dead wife is a mere afterthought in the game, and Ronan shows very little emotion towards her memory at all. In fact, after visiting his wife's grave, he strolls out of the graveyard with his little "swagger-strut-while-smoking-a-cigarette" animation that is used ad nauseum. Shouldn't he be feeling blue after visiting his wife's grave instead of acting like he's too cool to be bothered with things like emotion? The writers missed out on a chance to give this game an emotional side that it lacks. Still an interesting "whodunit" story though.

Immersion: 1/5
This is where the game lost me. So once Ronan wakes up in ghost form, he learns that he can't really interact with the physical world anymore, which is made evident when he tries to punch his killer and his fist goes right through the killer's face. Ronan can also pass through objects like tables, beds and interior walls. Exceptions are exterior walls which he can't pass through (because they were consecrated).

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't resurrect the adventure genre November 10, 2014
Platform for Display:PC Download
The Good: Great story with twists and turns, interesting ghost mechanics

The Bad: Dated visuals and gameplay, combat with demons feels shoehorned and unnecessary, can't really connect with characters, open world is lifeless and boring, investigations feel like aimless pixel hunts

I haven't been so misled by a game than Murdered. A murder mystery game about a cult in Salem, Massachusetts (my favorite type of murder mysteries) all wrapped around a serial killer known as the Bell Killer. You play as a ghost detective named Ronan who gets murdered by this killer during an investigation. You have a bratty teen named Joy who helps you in the real world and the story all comes to a nice close at the very end.

It's everything in between that really disappoints. This game not only feels about 10 years old but is some times down right boring. In each area you have items that need to be "examined" this turns into pixel hunting like the adventure games of yore. Some times I found myself to frustrated because the examine button wouldn't come up unless you were facing it just the right way, that's glitchy and annoying. Once you find all clues in an area you conclude the investigation by picking three of the clues that relate to the scene. This is where some of the nonsense gameplay comes in to play. Most of the time you don't even need all the clues to conclude and most clues are pointless for the scene. I feel like I'm hunting for all these clues as just filler for gameplay.

Is there any combat? Not really. A shoehorned combat scenario was put in by sneaking around demons and executing them with weird button combos. Sneaking around them is pretty tense, as is running from them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game if you know what you're getting.
I just finished the game yesterday, and I'll keep my review brief.

All in all, this is a solid game. The gameplay reminded me of a watered-down version of L.A. Noire. Read more
