4.0 out of 5 stars A Game That Sticks with You June 7, 2014
By Branden
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
I rented this game on an informed, educated whim. I had seen the previews for it, watched the trailers, overall it seemed like a pretty awesome game, but my wife and I weren't swimming in the money to buy it. So I got the PS3 copy from our local Redbox and loaded it onto my system.

What awaited me was not the experience I thought I was going to have, but something that was equally as entertaining and perhaps even more compelling. The story, to start things off, is amazing. It follows some common supernatural tropes and topics (it IS set in Salem, MA, after all), but the overall narrative is one that stays with you until (and after) you finish the game.

The gameplay intertwining gumshoe detective stories with the paranormal aspect made all the difference as far as how the plot engaged my curiosity throughout. I wanted to know how the game concluded and it pushed me to play more and more until everything was wrapped up.

Don't be surprised if this game doesn't last for hours upon hours like Assassin Creed, GTA, and Skyrim. I found the shorter storyline instilled all the more haste into the thriller aspect of this game. The side cases do take a little while to collect all the pieces, and helping out the NPCs who have their own side stories is intriguing. All in all, I was finished with about 80-90% of the game within 7-8 hours.

The graphics aren't a shining pinnacle for the gaming industry by any means, but they are certainly not disappointing on a PS3. The characters (maybe due to voice acting or something to that effect) fall a little flat sometimes, but the plot itself carries things forward.

Concluding the game felt fulfilling, similar to watching a good movie that is consistent in "strength" from beginning to end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very diffrent game June 3, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Just got into this game an let me say very different type of game. The graphics are good on the ps3. This game is like playing a Sherlock holmes type game. Not for everyone. its a thinking mans game. Something new in game play. If you liked heavy rain then you will most likely have fun with this game. Not a shooter, just a thinking person game. Will update my review once I am further into it, but so far I like what I see.

So I officially platinum the game 3 days after I bought it. So I feel like this review will be the most complete at this date. So, let's go on with the review

Story:
You're Ronan, a cop who dies and is trying to figure out who killed him and why, as a ghost, in Salem, Massachusetts. This game is basically using the old story about the Salem Witch Trials, an extremely dark time during America's history. As a ghost, it's up to you to figure out who the Bell Killer is and stop him, as he's been killing people left and right without cause, or so they say. The story is extremely good and doesn't fall flat to me. Many of the side stories are very gruesome and detailed, but very well done.

Gameplay:
Since you're a ghost, you have the ability to pass through walls and possess people (but you can't control them, other than Influence their thoughts). You also have the ability to teleport, which is a later ability, and destroy demons that are out to eat your soul. But, the town of Salem is a very religious city, so all their buildings are protected to prevent unwanted demons from invading the buildings, so you can just pass through any wall or building. Basically, this game is about investigating and looking around. There are clues that you have to find and use to see why the Bell Killer is murdering people. Also, there are a LOT of collectibles in the game. From different stories about people to the Bell Killer to Ronan's deceased wife's diary. That's not all, but trust me, there's a LOT of collectibles.

Music:

Uh....not a lot of music that's memorable, especially during the ending credits...CAUSE THERE WASN'T ANY!!! Most of the music is just spooky music and is there to scare you. Not a good soundtrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple detective game with a twist. June 25, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Played this for a week and it is one of the rare games I bother to platinum (It's a challenge, but with a keen eye (a guide) and perseverance, it's a cinch).

The game is quite short-- which is definitely not a bad thing. I, for one, am not a fan of extremely long 60hour single player action unless its an RPG or a JRPG.

Murdered: Soul Suspect is a misunderstood jewel in the sea of diamonds. Sure, its not game of the year quality but it has a lot of great moments. Do not expect a fast-paced game that does not need any brains or awareness to move on. On the contrary, it allows the gamer to try and observe carefully before making decisions. Each mistake in an investigation lowers the point tally--which has no reward whatsoever except your own perfectionism.

We have a handful of good detective games (LA Noire or even Heavy Rain to name a couple), but none of them really pull off a good supernatural twist to it. You are put in the shoes of a criminal-turned-detective (dont worry he's chill, he's not corrupt :D) who starts off with a BANG. Seven bangs, precisely. He is shot by a serial murdered in the town of Salem. The game explores the theme of the afterlife and how it works. Ghosts remain in the world because of unfinished business, demons are ghosts who have lost purpose in their ghostly lives or forgotten their unfinished business and is filled with remorse and bitterness (they are a gameplay aspect as well in the way of exorcism). Ghosts cannot enter or exit consecrated buildings unless a door or window is opened (most of Salem is consecrated btw due its gruesome history). Majority of the story revolves around finding out who the Bell Killer is and why he killed you.
