Patterson Hood & the Screwtopians - Back of A Bible

Biography

PATTERSON HOOD
MURDERING OSCAR (and other love songs)
Release date: June 9, 2009

I moved to Athens, GA on Aprils Fools Day, 1994. Perhaps I thought I was kidding myself, just stopping in on my way to the bigger city an hour to the Southwest. I moved into a little house on Ruth St. with my new friend, Brandon. We had panhandlers in our driveway and had a crack head that frequently banged on our door… Read more in Amazon's Patterson Hood Store

Editorial Reviews

2009 sophomore solo album from the leader of the Drive-By Truckers. The album was produced by Hood and long-time DBT producer David Barbe (Sugar). Most of his DBT band mates join him on the album as well as Don Chambers, Will Johnson and Scott Danbom from Centro-matic/South San Gabriel. This is also the first time Hood's father David Hood, famed Muscle Shoals bass player, joins him on a record. The album was recorded at Chase Park Transduction Studios in Athens, GA.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Understand Now.., June 25, 2009
This review is from: Murdering Oscar (Dig) (Audio CD)
I waited along time for this album to come out. This is the fourth great Drive By-Truckers CD...Sort of... It's minus the usual DBT lineup, but plus the screwtopians. Minus the country twang of Cooley, but add in a heaping dose of Patterson telling his stories in the ways that only southern boys can.

There was a review published stating that this album missed the point-counter point of song writing that often occurs between Cooley and Hood. Not so, in fact, contrasting writing, thoughts shine stronger and clearer with the album being a collection of tracks written in both '94 and '05. This album has a flow and progression much like Southern Rock Opera and a powerful story to be told. A gripping complete tale is spun in the CD's 13 tracks. Order the 33 for an extra three track bonus (and that great sound!)

Best told through warm tube amps and big old speakers, this is a album not to be missed. Less country more rock than Brighter Than, with the gritty raw feel of the early DBT releases.

Patterson Hood is frontman for the Drive-By Truckers and strikes out on his own for his second solo album. The closest comparison I can make To P Hood is the first Neil Young and Crazy Horse album. Does not fit everyone's tastes, but he comes up with some catchy melodies and always creates interseting lyrics. Check it out if you are a fan of Neil Young or the DBT.

Patterson Hood's new solo album is very impressive. It comes out at a perfect time too. This and the Drive-By Truckers odds and ends album which just came out should tide us over until the next DBT album comes out. Even though there are contributions from other DBT members here, you definitely notice who the backbone of that band is. Patterson rounded up some great songs that he wrote (except Todd Rundgren's "Range War") and put them all together into a fine collection. From the rocking title track to the piano-driven "Pride of the Yankees" to the excellent geek-rocking "I Understand Now" to the slow, brooding number "Belvedere", 'tis a very fun album to listen to. My favorite track right now is "Heavy and Hanging". The prevalent thumping tempo of this rocker is irresistible. Any DBT fan who doesn't have this album yet, should go out and take care of that problem. Highly recommeded.
