Book Description

April 2004
MURDERS MOST FOUL (And Other Execrable Crimes)

Susanna, Lady Appleton was a gentlewoman, a herbalist (author of A Cautionary Herbal, being a compendium of plants harmful to the health) – and an expert crime-solver during the reigns of Mary I and Elizabeth I, Queens of England during the turbulent 16th century. It was a time when religious differences were fought with the sword and the torture chamber, and an ardent Protestant could be burned at the stake for heresy under the rule Mary and an fervent Catholic could be executed for treason under the rule of Elizabeth.

In these eleven stories (five of which are previously unpublished), Susanna investigates a body found in a dovecote, death by Devil’s Turnips, the woman whose babies always died by being "overlaid," the use of a Neck Verse to save a condemned prisoner’s life, the mysterious tavern sign of a woolsack, and other cases full of the color and danger of the 16th century.

New introduction and historical notes to each story by the author, and a checklist of Kathy Lynn Emerson’s novels and stories. Cover painting by Linda Weatherly S. Cover design by Deborah Miller.

This review is from: Murders and Other Confusions: The Chronicles of Susanna, Lady Appleton, 16th-Century Gentlewoman, Herbalist, and Sleuth (Paperback)
Don't be fooled into thinking that this book is only for readers who care a lot about Elizabethan England. It has mysteries for everyone who wants a carefuly developed plot, interesting settings, and vivid characters. The historical aspect is just an added delight. The author has studied the period very well and furnishes the reader with many historical insights that increase his or her knowledge of Shakespearean England. The book is a series of short mysteries that have unique plots, but interconnected characters. They are all first rate and extremely enjoyable to read. I might never have read this book if it hadn't been for the praise given it by Jon Breen, the reviewer in "Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine." I'm glad he pointed it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murders and Other Confusions: The Chronicles of Susanna, Lady Appleton, 16th-Century Gentlewoman, Herbalist, and Sleuth, August 29, 2005
This review is from: Murders and Other Confusions: The Chronicles of Susanna, Lady Appleton, 16th-Century Gentlewoman, Herbalist, and Sleuth (Paperback)
I thought this book was great. I've enjoyed all of the Lady Appleton mysteries and it is easy to become involved in her life. This book of short stories filled in the gaps and was easy to follow chronilogically. Looking forward to more.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Elizabethan, October 28, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Murders and Other Confusions: The Chronicles of Susanna, Lady Appleton, 16th-Century Gentlewoman, Herbalist, and Sleuth (Paperback)
Lady Susanna Appleton is a sixteenth century education for the history fanatic; her adventures cover a wide reach of Elizabethan society in a way that humanizes the period and teaches the reader the language of the time. I am not a short story reader but I found these tales to be a delightful introduction to a character I will persue into the "Face Down" series. An invented character with a creative past, Lady Susanna has piqued my interest in the period and I want to know more. Emerson writes well, totally immersing her reader in the post-Henry VIIIth chaos of Renaissance England. A real joy to read!
