About the Author

To his friends and loved ones, Harris is predominately known as a nudge (non-Yiddish speakers, go ahead and look it up, and please note it doesn't rhyme with "budge"). The author's ethnic roots are betrayed by a nose whose remarkable proportions radiate his Semitic heritage like a lighthouse beacon. Harris' three children are united in a common belief that their father was born fully-formed as a grouchy adult. His long suffering wife bears silent testimony to the saying that "behind every successful man is a surprised woman."

More About the Author

Author Ed Harris was born in the Bronx and grew up on the East Coast. He traveled extensively between high school and college, backpacking across the Western U.S. and Canada and in a dozen or so European countries, and has lived in the US, Israel and the Netherlands. He moved to Seattle, home of Starbucks, in 1990, drawn by the over-priced coffee and beauty of the Northwest, which he observes on a daily basis from the climate-controlled comfort of his home and car. Although he is currently bald, as a youth he sported a six-inch thick helmet shaped Jew-fro, so thick and lush you could lose your hand in it, the memory of which still inspires him.

Harris has three children, of assorted genders, skin colors and countries of origin, who are united in a common belief that their father was born fully-formed as a grouchy adult. His long-suffering wife bears silent testimony to the saying that "behind every successful man is a surprised woman."

Prior to becoming an author, Harris had a lengthy career in corporate finance and technology. He served as part of the founding management team of several Pacific Northwest startups that were subsequently acquired by major Fortune 500 corporations. Before moving to Seattle, he was an investment banker on Wall Street and worked on financings and mergers and acquisitions for US and global businesses.

The author's literary favorites include SJ Perelman, Mark Twain and Michael Chabon. Ernest Hemingway once wrote of someone going broke "gradually, then suddenly." The author implores the reading public to buy his books so he can avoid the same fate.

This was quite a quirky story and fairly light reading. But it piqued my curiosity and I just had to keep reading it to the end. It really wasn't my kind of book - American schoolkids isn't a subject which interests me, even if they are gay Catholics with Jewish friends and their prowess at basketball is revered in the 'Hood. I'm still not sure why I read this. But the fact I finished it is a measure of the author's ability to engage the reader. If you're the type who'll read just about anything as long as it's interesting, you'll probably enjoy this book because it's a good story. There's even some laugh-out-loud bits in it.

It was well written with only a few little typos. It deserves a good rating.

One of the best first novels I have read. The story will have you laughing and cheering for the protagonist, Ed Harris touches on a delicate subject in such a profound why you feel the pain and confusion that conflict the main character. Ed's ability to bring the high school years alive make the book not only a great read but one you want to keep close like a good friend.

Murphy's Bed is an enjoyable, very readable novel about the angst of a teenage boy. It is humorous and sweet. Written with imagination and mischievousness, the characters have the ring of truth. The author does a good job of balancing the obstacles of being different with the underlying goodness of humankind. I recommend it.

Loved the story! Ed Harris has a unique way of bringing the characters to life. His wit and humor made this the type of book you can't stop reading but you slow down at the end because you don't want it to end.
