Little known masterpiece,
This review is from: Musa: Ancestral Streams (Mlps) (Audio CD)
During this period, while Stanley Cowell recorded for what I believe was his and Charles Tolliver's own label, Strata East, he wrote some incredible music. Many of his best pieces are on this solo piano record, now a CD. The first 2 songs are amazingly beautiful compositions that anyone with an ear (or heart) would love. He developed his own variation on a McCoy Tynerish style, yet his style was quite original and creative. I was turned on to this record by a very accomplished musician friend, Jody Christian. A name anyone involved in the Chicago jazz scene would know as one of our greatest pianists. At the time, he named Equipoise as his favorite tune. After playing it with him (I play the drums) and hearing this entire record, I certainly understand why he admired Cowell so much. The highest recommendation, and kudos to the Japanese label for recognizing a masterpeice.
