5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful
One of the most unique and beautiful swords I have seen for sale. I love the white cord wrapped around the handle and the lack of a tsuba(hand guard) really makes it stand out. The scabbard contains a small knife called a kozuka, which is basically a letter opener(no really, I'm serious). The blade is extremely sharp and looks exquisite when cleaned. I can't really think...

I was looking for a functional sword to mess around with, basically... act like a bad-ass with, swing around, cut stuff up, train with, use for self defense, etc. This was NOT the sword for that, it chipped when lightly struck with a letter opener, as well as denting when hitting a ceiling fan light. This is my first katana. I carefully reviewed around 50 before chosing this one, carbon steel, low price, durability of the blade, and style of wood, hilt were main considerations important to me.

I feel very satisfied now.

Any parents out there buying for children, this is not a toy. Its a sharp weapon, the real deal.

I watched a video of this cutting through large bamboo and stuff easily. Which any young one might severly wound themself or someone else, even cutting off a limb.

Con: The detachable throwing blade sucks sorta, except maybe as a letter opener.

It was as it said battle ready when it came out the box. I got it for my brother and he loved it. the only thing is the little secret knife shakes a little and might fall out the handle but the sword itself is beautiful. Great buy and the price was great too. I recomend you to get this sword.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's an expensive set piece, March 27, 2011

I was looking for a functional sword to mess around with, basically... act like a bad-ass with, swing around, cut stuff up, train with, use for self defense, etc. This was NOT the sword for that, it chipped when lightly struck with a letter opener, as well as denting when hitting a ceiling fan light. If you want something to hang on your wall to look cool and occasionally swing around to show off to friends, and nothing more, maybe get this (although you can buy swords for roughly the same price right off amazon that look great and basically do what I was looking for). The "hidden tanto thrower"(all it is is a dull little letter opener) falls out all the time and sucks, but, looks cool. The sword is full tang which you need with a sword and pretty sharp, and it is carbon steel but low quality, and the hand wrapping is just individual strips glued on. Overall, it's not that great. The fact of the matter is that if you want something just to stick on your wall and look cool and never use or mess around with, buy something allot cheaper or you're wasting money, if you want something to honestly use as a sword you'll need to spend a good bit more money ($300-$500 would be good for a good starter/training real katana, and over $1000 for a great, genuine, weapon for an avid collector and enthusiast.)All in all, it's cool, but i wish i had bought something else or put this money towards a real "Japanese folded steel" katana for about $300. If you were going to buy a sword for the reasons I bought this one for, save your money and buy a real sword for at least $100-$200.

5.0 out of 5 stars very good for its price, March 7, 2011

I am a 2nd degree black-belt in kendo and needed a new sword ASAP because I had a performance coming up and my previous sword was damaged and unusable.

After looking around for a cheap yet okay quality sword on countless websites, I decided to search up for swords on Amazon.

The customer service was amazing. The seller (Martial Arts Land with Fulfillment by Amazon) always replied to my emails within 12 hours. What really made an impression on me was when they offered to upgrade my shipping speed from the FREE SUPER SAVING to Two-Day Shipping for free because I asked them if they could send it out ASAP.

When the katana came, I was pleased by its appearance. The scabbard has a very smooth lacquered finish and the
blade itself is pretty nice for its relatively low price. I don't think it's high carbon since it retains scratches after cutting bamboo mats but its strong enough not the bend or scratch deeply as long as you swing correctly. Oh and careful; I cut my thumb while cleaning it!

The white wrapping of the handle is not pure white but rather kind of dirtied cream color but I don't have any problem with it since it's going to get dirty anyways (if you don't to get your white wrappings dirty then buy a sword with black wrappings). I think the handle is glued inside to the blade... I can't disassemble it. The golden dragons that are in the handle are switched around, meaning the handle is made for a left-handed person so I had to adjust the dragons around with some difficulties.

But despite its setbacks, I find it really reliable. I don't worry about the blade getting damaged and the blade it extremely stable in its handle unlike other swords in its price-range.

As for the throwing knife, I found it annoying since it's not compatible with my forms/style for I just gave it to my mom. The metal's pretty weak but it sure makes a great letter opener.

If you're a serious kendo practitioner and have a small budget, then I'd recommend this sword since it's great for its price but if you want the legit thing, then save up ~1-2 K and buy it off [...].

But as of now, I love this sword!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pucker factor personified, June 17, 2011

How does one review a sword and not be writing from prison serving time for manslaughter or worse? How good is it for its intended purpose? I cannot speak for other people but I have never been attacked by a bundle of bamboo.

So what is the intended purpose? Collecting dust on a wall? If so the coloring is striking.

Is the purpose just to have a samurai style sword? It satisfies this purpose in spades. A samurai sword has a mystique. Just unsheathing it makes you want to grunt like Tashiro Mifune.

Is the purpose backup home defense? It sure beats a baseball bat for its pucker factor. People think you can use it and thanks to the movies know it is magical.

It does come sharp. I got some trivial improvement with a 1200 grit whetstone. There were really only a few small burrs at this grit level suggesting it was finished at the factory with a stone in the 900-1000 range. That is uncommon for any factory edged item. It makes me think when they say handmade they mean handmade.

The hidden "thrower" isn't heavy enough to throw. Not only that, it is barely sharpened at all. The point of this gimmick is unclear. The suggestion to use it as a letter opener is a good one.

No hilt is just plain dumb but as ninja bamboo bundles are uncommon the chances of using this in a sword fight are rather remote. Yes I know there are some old illustrations of swords without hilts. I also know that is all there is about swords without hilts. If in fact they did exist they were not meant for sword on sword action.

Myself? I just wanted to own one and luckily found a cheap one that looks good, is a conversation starter and, should the need arise, slice a pucker in half far beyond the reach of a threatening knife.

I know myself. If it had not been up to snuff I would have bought more and more expensive swords until I was satisfied. This saved me hundreds of dollars.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!!!!, April 13, 2011
This review is from: Musashi Handmade Zetsurin Samurai Katana Sword Sharp (Misc.)
This sword is a beautiful piece of art. I took it out of the box and there wasn't a scratch on it, and the Saya was super shiny. The lack of Tsuba really brings detail to the Tsuka. there is but one thing that I didn't like... the Mekugi (pegs) were exposed and the Ito doesn't cover it... but other than that, this sword is amazing, and the blade is sharp. It was definitely worth the 50$ and I think it should've been bought for $100+ definitely worth the buy. I would recommend this to anyone who knows how to be careful with a dangerous weapon. Again, an excellent buy.

This could have came a little sooner, but when I got it I was extremly pleased and still am. I only touched a small portion of the blade to see how sharp it was.I wouldnt exactly say its "razor sharp" but its damn near close enough, I didnt want to touch the blade to much because the oils on your skinn can dull and rewen the blade. But all in all this was well worth the money and is a BEAUTIFUL sword If i payed twice as much i would still be happy with it

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first sword, August 31, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Musashi Handmade Zetsurin Samurai Katana Sword Sharp (Misc.)
I purchased this sword as a first time buyer. Wasn't expecting anything too great since all the other swords in this price range seemed worth of less value. This one had good reviews so I decided to get this one to try it out. It was shipped earlier than the estimated date. Came in a tight fighting box, with another sword box with the actual sword. The box says "Musashi". The sword itself was wrapped in a black cloth; nice touch :)

It's a full tang sword which is great since there's no need to worry about blade stability. The sword + sheath had no breaks. The blade was a bit dirty with what seems to be particles from a sharpening stone (or something of that nature). Not a problem with a quick clean. The blade is sharp.

When I first picked up the sword, it felt a little top heavy; meaning it would weight down up towards the tip. Take this with a grain of salt though, since I've only ever held a few in the past. This could also be attributed to the style of sword. Not really a problem after a few minutes of holding it.

Overall, I am glad I bought this. It's great for the price. I recommend this as a first time sword, a decoration, or just something to have around. I also wonder if I can put a tsuba on this. I'll have to check that out. The only thing left to do is try it out one some things. If I get the chance, I will post some pictures.

Lastly, I came across this website (no affiliation) when looking around about this sword. It's a decent review of the sword + a small video at the end. [...]

Over the years, I have owned a few similar swords brought elsewhere but none looked as sturdy and nice as this one. The sword is fairly sharp out of the box as well. My purpose is mainly for display unless a burglar breaks-in while I am sharpening this beauty. For the price, (imho) this is a great buy!
