Book Description

September 15, 2009
A leading orthopedic surgeon and a top sports chiropractor team up to offer a groundbreaking new approach to remaining injury-free and recovering from injury faster.

Muscle injuries are not just for sports superstars anymore. Back, shoulder, hip, and knee problems bedevil more and more people than ever before. Muscle Medicine provides a way to prevent such injuries from happening and to treat them when they do without drugs or surgery. The product of a collaborative effort between two widely recognized authorities on sports injuries, Muscle Medicine relies on cutting-edge medical and therapeutic expertise to deliver what many doctors cannot: explanations of how to maintain good muscle health, how to treat common muscle injuries, such as “Tennis Elbow” and “Cell Phone Neck,” and how to determine when joint surgery is and is not necessary for some common orthopedic problems. By focusing on the health of our muscles, we can prevent many sports injuries from occurring and recover faster from the ones that do, say the coauthors, whose A-list clients have included John McEnroe and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Featuring more than 100 illustrations that show the basics of muscle mechanics, along with various stretching, strengthening, and self-treatment exercises, Muscle Medicine will help readers enjoy pain-free, active lives no matter what their age or activity level.

More About the Author

Dr. Rob DeStefano first learned about chiropractic when he was 14 years old, inspired by an Osteopath who did adjustments and motivated Rob to want to help people get and stay healthy. Having sustained serious injuries playing high school football, Rob was treated by a chiropractor who got him back on the field. These injuries and his recovery helped him to understand the injuries of others--in fact, in high school and college, Rob was known for helping his teammates recognize and address injuries and other health issues. Throughout his academic sports career, Rob excelled in track, football (earning a scholarship to Kutztown University), deacathlon, powerlifting, lacrosse, rugby (earning a scholarship at Palmer College of Chiropractic) and triathlon. To date, he has competed in over 300 races, including 9 Ironmans and 2 Ironman World Championships. He has experienced the ins and outs of injury and recovery many times over, and it has become his passion.

In part due to this athletic experience, Dr. Rob recognized early the importance of muscle in the big healthcare picture: even in his days at Chiropractic college, he set himself apart by incorporating muscle work in his treatment of fellow students. Soon after graduation, he earned his CCSP (Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician), and attended his first ART (Active Release Techniques) seminar. After a few years of practicing chiropractic and ART, he began teaching, and since the early 90's has lectured and taught at over 100 ART seminars and related teaching and lecturing events.

Dr. Rob opened his first offices in Ridgefield Park and in Lodi, NJ in 1987. In 1999, he had the opportunity to open his first NY office, at the elite training facility La Palestra on the upper west side. In the world of athletics he has worked with athletes of all levels, including the US Olympic Bobsled/Luge/Skeleton teams, US Olympic Hockey Team, the NHL, NBA, LPGA, and the NFL. Dr Rob became an official ART provider to the New York Football Giants in 2002, seeing them through their 2008 Superbowl Championship and continuing at present as the official ART provider and official Chiropractor. 2009 saw the opening of his first two satellite offices in NY, in The Orion and The Ariel.

As a result of the past few years of working and discussing cases with Dr. Kelly, Dr. Rob felt that the time was right to champion the emerging need for diagnosis and treatment of muscle, and muscle's important role in the future of healthcare. Work began on what is now Muscle Medicine, available now. As appears in the book, he has developed a new treatment technique and self-treatment modality to compliment doctor care that has already been successfully adopted by many of his athletes and patients (see thefastprogram.com). An accompanying self-treatment tool, already being used by national, professional sports teams, will be introduced next, all in the service of Muscle Medicine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, an answer to my running injuries, September 14, 2009
This review is from: Muscle Medicine: The Revolutionary Approach to Maintaining, Strengthening, and Repairing Your Muscles and Joints (Paperback)

I have been a long distant runner for over 30 years.
I have run over 30 marathons, suffering many overuse injuries over the years.
I have been to orthopedists, chiropractors, massage theerapists and accupuncturists over the years for an assortment of injuries.
After reading "Muscle Medicine" I have a new clarity on the cause of many of my past problems.
Most importantly, I now have a strategy for self treatment which should resolve my problems.
As a senior runner, this material is critical!
And, the best part are the sections on prevention. I am now in control!
I feel sorry for the medical practionioners in New Jersey- no more business!!
I thank the author for sharing this information.
For athletes everywhere, this is long overdue!!!
Dr Marvin Lagstein
(very amateur but determined athlete)

This review is from: Muscle Medicine: The Revolutionary Approach to Maintaining, Strengthening, and Repairing Your Muscles and Joints (Paperback)
As a physical therapist, I was initially interested in reading the book to learn more about the F.A.S.T. treatments, but since reading the book I thought it was thorough and to the point regarding health and injury. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about fitness/health no matter what their level of education.

3.0 out of 5 stars Muscle Medicine is written mainly in layman's language and easy to understand., October 11, 2009

This review is from: Muscle Medicine: The Revolutionary Approach to Maintaining, Strengthening, and Repairing Your Muscles and Joints (Paperback)
I bought this book mainly because I wanted to learn more about "frozen shoulder" (my condition) and how to prevent other injuries in the future. I was pleased that the book was written mainly in layman's language, making it easy to understand. However, I was disappointed that there wasn't more on my specific condition (only 2 pages). There is quite a lot of general information and exercises on how to prevent some conditions, and there are specific exercises to do for shoulder health, etc. I guess I was hoping for even more. Overall, it's a very good book and I haven't seen anything quite like it for the general public.
