the great george jacson,
This review is from: In Muscle Shoals (Audio CD)
George Jackson is one of southern soul's greatest writers and an underrated singer in his own right. Nearly everyone on earth has heard Bob Seger's 'Old Time Rock n' Roll'(wriiten by Jackson) and those of us over 40 remember Seger taking a long ride on his 'Tryin' to Live My Life Without You'- originally done by soul great Otis Clay (his biggest hit too).
Jackson also penned 'One Bad Apple' (originally intented for the J5) perhaps the only Osmond Brothers tune that you wouldn't mind listening to. He wrote the Pickett classic 'Man and a Half' and, what has now become a blues standard, ZZ Hill's, 'Down Home Blues'. There are many other great Jackson tunes (the wonderful 'If I Could Reach Out' for Otis Clay and the Johnny Taylor blues, 'Last Two Dollars'). As a performer, Jackson wrote and sang the great, amazingly hooky, 'Aretha, Sing One for Me'. And there is no greater southern soul ballad than his gospel drenched 'Gonna Hold On to What I've Got'. None of the above are included on this CD but George Jackson seems incapable of writing a tune not worth hearing. There's a lot of gems and though it's pricey here...it's worth it.

I respect George Jackson as a song writer and a vocalist and this CD supports my feelings. I love George's work on this project but I think the "Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section" stole the show. These are some very clean tracks (you can hear each instrument) and range from Soul (Muscle Shoals Style) to Disco. They are demo tracks but you will not know it because they done so well. If you are a soul music or Muscle Shoals Sound fan you need this CD. I have not stopped listening to my since since I received it 2 weeks ago. GO SWAMPERS ... You are the BEST!!
