Review

"Next to the Bible, best book I've ever read."
Amanda Smith, Amazon.com Verified Reviewer

From the Author

Your beliefs about the Lord Jesus Christ, the Almighty Father in Heaven and your church are beliefs that you hold close to your heart, and rightfully so. However, your beliefs are about to be challenged in a way that you never thought possible.

The story you are about to read is completely true in every sense. There are no exaggerations or embellishments. What you are about to read happened to me several years ago and I'm sharing it with you for one reason and one reason only. I cannot, however, reveal this reason unless you read this story from beginning to end.  If you make it to the end you'll discover the reason... and I promise you that it will be worth your time.

But let me give you a fair warning: what you are about to read might anger, frustrate and agitate your senses beyond description. This story may force you to examine the beliefs you hold so dear to your heart. This story is not for the weak-minded, nor is it for those who have their sensibilities easily offended.

Many who begin this story won't make it to the end.  Will you have the courage, the heart and the honesty of character to finish this story to its end?

It is very well written.

The author is to be commended for making sense of what most people never bother to try to figure out--what the Bible really says in its simplest form.

Our daughter has always been one of these I'm a good person, so I will go to heaven type people. We have been trying to talk Bible and Christ to her for years to no avail. My wife gave her a copy of this wonderful book with shear fear of what she would do. Something in her reading of this glorious book kicked her in the tail and I baptized her into Christ Aug. 09, 2012. I thank God above for touching her heart, and for Michael Shank and his story that touched another lost soul. This is a must buy, read and give to a lost soul book.

When a book cover contains the Bible on its front you are expecting it to contain Biblical teaching or references. This book is one of the few good novels that is in line with Bible teaching. The story line is interesting and exciting, very emotional at times and hard to put down. The author is to be commended for making sense of what most people never bother to try to figure out--what the Bible really says in its simplest form. It is definitely one to pass on to friends, relatives and acquaintances if you love them and have their best interest at heart. I love that the book deals with race in such a simple way and shows that as Christians, truly, all are equal. Don't let the anger you may feel when you read this book make you put it down, Keep reading, it will pass as you learn and compare notes. P. Pelfrey

When I volunteered to write this book review, I had just finished reading the book and had ordered two more copies. As I write this, I don't actually have the book to reference because we gave away all of our copies (we ordered nine more copies today), so this is probably going to be more of a "convincing argument for reading the book" rather than a "book review."
Muscle and a Shovel, by Michael Shank, is a 386 page paperback book, published June 1, 2011. This book tells the true story of a man who is going about his normal life, working a normal job, hoping for normal things. One day, his normal life is turned upside down when his co-worker, Randall, asks him a simple question. From that point on, Mike and his wife begin a trek down a completely different road than expected.

Mike begins to question what he has always been taught about God and the Bible. He begins talking to friends and relatives and religious experts in his life. He struggles to support what he had always known, and he hopes they will give him some direction. Without satisfactory answers, he goes back to Randall, who guides him back to the Bible at every turn.
Over the course of several months, Mike and Randall's friendship develops into one of love and trust as they have early morning discussions and Bible studies (usually accompanied by Krispy Kreme donuts). Mike's emotions are so strong. Sometimes, he shows anger at what he had always believed, awe at the love and gentleness that Randall shows him, and excitement as he tells his wife about all that he learns.
From the very first chapter, this book had me gripped and I couldn't wait to keep reading. This would have been one of those books that I would have stayed up all night to finish, except for the fact that I had to share it with my husband.

This gripping and powerful book has had a massive impact on many people that I personally know. It is the true story of Michael Shank (the author) and his journey to finding Christ and becoming a Christian. My copy has been read by 8 other people in the past few weeks. Without exception, every person who has read it has ordered multiple copies for themselves and to share with others. As a result of their enthusiasm for the book, 25 others also ordered multiple copies to share with others.

This book will bring any honest person to Christ. This book will bring any honest Christian to their knees, thanking God for the amazing tool that He has given us to help spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.

This book gives a thorough insight into Michael Shank's progress from being lost in spiritual ignorance of the religion of Jesus Christ to the knowledge of the Scriptures that informed and motivated him to obey the gospel. He was encouraged and challenged by a very patient man who truly lived Christianity in his daily life before Mr. Shank. The book clearly shows the shallowness of denominational churches and errors of man-made churches in this world. I highly recommend this book. Every person who belongs to a denomination needs to read it with an open mind and an open Bible.

This book is WONDERFUL! It reads like a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I couldn't put it down! There is a statement about "Fair Warning" in the beginning and you will understand why when you read it. It will REALLY cause you to re-think everything you once thought to be true. It is eye-opening and life-changing. It gives a whole new persceptive on the religious world and will challenge you to DIG for the truth like never before! (Hence the Shovel term in the title I guess). I cannot say enough good things about this book. Hold on tight. It's a wild-ride. If ever there was a "MUST READ" though, this is it!

Very well wriiten. Easy to read and follow. Extremely honest look at the Word of God and the distortions made by the religious world. The author "bangs the pulpit" in the last chapter, but the book is very very good! If you are serious about salvation read this book. If you are comfortable and do not want to think, leave this book alone.
