Book Description

October 2001
This is the most current surgical text describing and illustrating: limb-sparing surgical procedures in lieu of amputations for bone and soft-tissue tumors of the extremities, shoulder and pelvic girdle sarcomas, and new, sophisticated, multimodality procedures for truncal and abdominal sarcomas. Many of the procedures described in this text were developed by the authors, Drs. Malawer and Sugarbaker, who have a combined surgical experience of over 50 years. This text has over 400 color illustrations and schematics drawings, in addition to imaging studies and full color intraoperative and clinical photographs.
The techniques described represent the state of the art in the treatment of adult and pediatric bone and soft-tissue sarcomas. Until the last decade, almost all were routinely treated by amputation, whereas today amputation is required in less than 5% of all cases. This textbook provides step-by-step guidance to surgeons performing surgery for musculoskeletal tumors. Its contents are the result of combined surgical, clinical, and research interests and efforts.

Editorial Reviews

Review

`The information, particularly regarding the history, development, availability and applications of prostheses in this type of surgery, is certainly the most complete account that I have seen. This section also includes excellent chapters on phantom limb pain, anaesthetics and pain management for such large resection cases and also a discussion of the principles of rehabilitation without excessive detail. This text is an excellent and perfect reference for any surgical department but in particular for those where oncology has a high profile. It would make excellent reading for any general or orthopaedic registrar and similarly would be an appropriate addition to the library of any individual orthopaedic surgeon or surgical oncologist.'

5.0 out of 5 stars This book should sit along side your Devita's CANCER, January 10, 2002
This review is from: Musculoskeletal Cancer Surgery: Treatment of Sarcomas and Allied Diseases (Hardcover)
This comprehensive and complete book is filled with vivid color illustrations and photographs. It provides a basic overview followed by an in-depth, step-by-step approach to surgical resection of tumors of each compartment of the body.It is technical though it reads in a comprehendable manner. I think that this would be a great volume for anyone (from therapist to oncologist)involved in the care/treatment of orthopedic patients or oncology patients with tumors of the musculoskeletal system.
