Editorial Reviews

On October 1st, The Wood Brothers will release their new album The Muse, on Zac Brown s
Southern Ground Artists. Produced by country-music legend Buddy Miller, the album embodies a newfound
musical bond between brothers Oliver and Chris Wood one cemented by two years on the road with a new
full-time member, drummer Jano Rix.
Recorded at Southern Ground Studios in Nashville, The Muse mines The Wood Brothers timeless influences
Robert Johnson, Willie Nelson, Charles Mingus and showcases their high-lonesome harmonies, Oliver s
gritty acoustic guitars, Chris virtuosic standup bass and their warrior poet lyrics. New to this recording is the
shuitar, a beat-up acoustic guitar rigged with tuna cans and other noisemakers, which Jano uses (and has
patented) as a percussive instrument.

I am 59 years old and have been a music fanatic all my life. The first time I sampled this download it stunned me with how flat-out great it is. I felt like I did when, many years ago, I listened to the self-titled (second) album, "The Band," by The Band. ("Music From Big Pink was their first, as my distant memory recalls...) Anyway, I knew the first time I listened to "The Band" and held the brown album sleeve in my hands that I was listening to a major work that would live on for years. I got the same dumfounded, stunned feeling when I listened to this. It is profoundly good -- and it helps that there is a hint of Levon Helm in the vocals. This is just really, really great. I don't know how long I'll still walk this earth, but I know that this album is something that I'll listen to in regular rotation for the rest of my life. It is that GOOD!

P.S. I came back later and added this: Because the CD is just $1 more than the download and I have Amazon Prime, so free 2-day shipping, I went ahead and ordered the CD instead of the download, so I'll have the "hard copy" of this release in case something ever happens to the download. I'll rip it to mp3 when the CD gets here and then put it away with my other "Essentials" that I have backed up on CDs, and the ripped mp3 will go onto my iPod. This music is just amazing! The brothers' earlier releases were very good, but this thing is just miles above anything they've done before...

The album itself is a personal favorite, but the vinyl pressing plant did an atrocious job with this product. Tons of distortion, vocals frequently clip, and more skipping than a game of hopscotch at a school playground. Additionally, the vinyl itself has clearly visible "ripples" across the surface. I thought I might have just received a defective product, but the second order was in no better condition and a friend's copy had all of the same issues as well.

Really a shame because they completely botched a near-perfect album with a terrible vinyl pressing.

I saw this band on Zak Browns concert series. Good stuff! Very earthy and unique. If I would put a label on this, it would be bluesy Americana, with a bit of gospel thrown in. It is also Dylanesque with it's thought provoking lyrics. This cd will be in regular rotation for years to come. Why only 4 stars? I guess it would be the singer's somewhat one dimensional voice. (I shall probably get past that and just enjoy the total package, as I did with Dylan :-)

Very very good album, possibly their best yet. Production sounds awesome, as do the harmonies (as usual). I really like the direction these guys are headed in. I hate to say it but what holds this album back are the songs that Chris sings lead on. He is one of the best bassists out there and a killer harmony singer, but in my opinion when he sings lead it just breaks up the forward momentum of the album, just like on Smoke Ring Halo. Having said that, these are probably the best of the songs that he does sing lead on. Still definitely definitely get this album though!

Love these guys! Do yourself a favor and see them live. The Muse is a great example of the continuation of their evolution and continued gift of song.

This is such an incredible album that I don't think words can do it justice, but I am so excited about it, I want to tell people about it anyway. To begin, there isn't a mediocre song on the album. All of the songs are amazing, and a few of the songs are better than "amazing" (high praise, I know, but well deserved). The best song on the album, and perhaps the best song of 2014, is the second track, "Neon Tombstone." I am not one to listen to the same song over and over, but I can't hear this one enough. The chorus is musically and lyrically beautiful and catchy in a gospel style. The third track, "Sing About It" is almost as good and has equally simplistic but poignant lyrics. "The Muse" is a sweet love song, and "I Got Loaded" has a breezy island feel. Fans of Americana, folk, and thinking man's rock should find much to enjoy on The Wood Brother's latest offering.

These guys are very talented and have a great indie sound.
Unique vocals, great percussion and a solid, creative acoustic bass
make a great band to play a good range of music.
