With one or two exceptions, these stories are great. As the title indicates, the theme of this anthology is the Muses, and so each story is inspired by one of the nine Muses. As with any anthology, not all of the stories agreed with me, but most of them were quite good. They include each of the different Doctors (up to the eighth), and various companions such as Sarah Jane, Victoria, Jamie, Leela, Nyssa, and Ace.
A few that stood out as being exceptional: "Confabula" by Ian Potter, in which the Doctor visits a world where the survivors of a nuclear holocaust live on constantly moving trains, and where reality must be questioned; "Katarina in the Underworld" by Steve Lyons, an excellent one that has the Doctor help a fallen companion to navigate the Underworld, challenging Charon, outwitting Cerberus, and facing off with Hades himself; and "The Glass Princess" by Justin Richards, in which all of the Doctors, in turn, help a young girl who has been poisoned, and whose life becomes the basis for several fairy tales. |
