Continuous mix of mid-tempo soul/R&B/hip-hop/funk,
By A Customer

What more can be said about about this record that hasn't already been said? This disc compiles some of the greatest grooves of Mark Farina's legendary Mushroom Jazz evenings in San Francisco. Some of you have probably heard Farina spin house, but you should know that Mushroom Jazz is NOT a house album. Instead, it is a heady mix of some smoothest mid-tempo underground tracks ever put out on vinyl (and now CD). Some of the glory of this album can be found in the variety of musical styles Farina manages to fuse together in a seamless mix which transcends categorization. But, more importantly, the FEELING this album conveys to the listener and the incredible beats are both unique and fresh. I've searched a long time for another record similar to this one, but I don't think it exists. Snap this album up and you'll see what I mean. Then you'll know why I'll be the first one in line for Mushroom Jazz II.

I just haven't listened to it in awhile. This is excellent for anyone who likes acid jazz, jazz, hip hop and more. There is a lot of good music on this cd. I bought it during a time when I only wanted to listen to acid jazz because of its mellow flow with funky base lines, break beats and a drippy mix of keyboards, horns, vocals and rhyming. It is definately one of my favorites. Check it out.

Although I love the songs, I cringe at the transitioning. I expected the mixing to be more professional. Overlooking that aspect, Farina's selections are wonderful. I still love the CD enough to give it a good rating.

This album was the first acid jazz disc that I ever bought and it practically blew my socks off. While there are some unevenness in the songs, I couldn't stop listening to it for months. Even after long periods of not listening to it, I have always been able to come back to this album and enjoy it. A must have!!!

A smooth flowing DJ mix with spicy, upbeat samples,

Though the transitions between the numbers are somewhat cacophonous (two songs playing at once in different keys), the album succeeds in creating a sophisticated and energized feel. The bonus interactive CD that makes the user the DJ is fun, and makes the title worth every penny.

Amazing,

This has truly created a new genre of music in my mind, and so far, DJ Mark Farina is my only example to offer. I've heard Volume II, as well, and it is even better--so I've made my purchase of volume III with even higher expectations. One problem I have, though, is that in digital form, I've noticed that, despite the fact that all the tracks blend perfectly together (so they're obviously in the right order), and that they're named as listed on the CD case and Amazon track list, none of the song titles actually describe their songs. In fact, most song titles describe OTHER songs on the CD. For instance, "Gibby Music", track 5, should totally be titled track 11's title, "Music Use It". Same problem on volume II, with "Liquid [Instrumental]" (which clearly isn't entirely instrumental), and "Make Me Happy [DJ Spinna Original Mix]", which is what the girl is saying in "Liquid" the entire time (. . ."and you make me happy. . ."). I don't know. Minor. I'm just OCD. It bothers me. Otherwise, great, great compilation!!

Interesting, chill acid jazz,

In certain situations (late night chilling, long drives, or just anytime you're stoned) this album is pure gold. Mark Farina knows how to keep it ruff, and mix it smooth.

A great late-night party mix,

DJ Mark Farina shows off his smoooooth skills on this treat of a CD. Many of the cuts to me sound more "soul" than "jazz", but this in no way detracts from the jazz vibe. The second bonus disc is a multimedia CD-ROM that works on both Macs and Windows.

smooth and sexy beats,
This review is from: Mushroom Jazz (Audio CD)
If you've never heard of Mark Farina, please wait no further and get this CD! Mushroom Jazz is an interesting mix of hip-hop, jazz, and funky beats. The CD is incredibly smooth and you'll find yourself tapping your foot throughout the entire album. The mixing is seemless and I like how he blends previous or future tracks into a song that is currently being played. The track might be In Hale, but it'll incorporate some beats/vocals from J-Live. Mushroom Jazz is quiet a remarkable and rare CD. I love it!
