An excellent guide with exquisite watercolour illustrations.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mushrooms of Northwest North America (Paperback)
Helene M. E. Schalkwijk-Barendsen's guide to the mushrooms of Northwest North America is an excellent introduction to this subject. Schalkwijk-Barendsen covers all the mushrooms one is likely to encounter in this region with both informative text and beautiful watercolour illustrations also painted by the author. Species are referenced by both common and Latin name making this book accessible to both the interested novice and the experienced mushroom enthusiast. This book should be a first-choice for anyone who love the outdoors, mushrooms and art.

This is a good reference book for your library. It is well done with the exception of the artist renderings, which are good, but not as good as photographs & the data is separated from the renderings, which I find a little more difficult to use.I much prefer "All That the Rain Promises & More" by David Arora, his photos are very representative of what you will see in the forest & the book is organized to where the photo & information are together in one area.

A nice book to get started on understanding mushrooms,

This book makes a nice starter book for understanding the mushrooms you see in the forest. The illustrations are nicely done and, as a complete neophyte to the subject, I am able to narrow down my searches and identify what I am looking at. It is a little cumbersome trying to connect the drawings to the descriptions to the full descriptions in the back but it works like many nature guides do plus this is a huge subject and hard to get into a book.I would recommend this to anyone who is trying to become familiar with the various mushrooms around them in a "I know the name of that fungus" sort of way. |
