Smoking 70s reggae from the UK, Matumbi is kind of a rare item that fused funk, melodic roots reggae and a 70s rock feel with soulful and bluesy vocals and vocal harmonies. A rhodes in there for good measure. It is surprising these guys are not more well known. They are hot. "Brother Louie", "Law of the Land", "Guide Us Jah", "Go Back Home", and the tripified/funkified/dubified "Wishing On A Star", a Rose Royce cover - are among my favorites, but there are hardly any weak tracks. The level of musicianship is refined and polished and there is some very original and cool stuff on here including a number of covers such as afore-mentioned Rose Royce's "Wishing On A Star"; Kool & the Gang's Funky Stuff has been redone as "Reggae Stuff", and Bob Dylan's "Man In Me" takes on new life. These guys may be obscure outside collector's circles, but undeservedly so! Check them out if you get the chance - I don't think you'll be disappointed.
