Just for Jane Pickens fans,

This review is from: Music in the Air (Kern-Hammerstein) (Audio CD)
An unusual record this is. First of all, you never get the feeling that it's an original revival recording since all the songs are interpreted by Jane Pickens. A few tracks are just instrumental (Al Goodman and his orchestra) and some others are sung by The Guild Choristers, yet it's Miss Pickens who leads the band. It's quite odd that a Broadway musical has only one singer, so if somebody knows what the nature of this record is, the information will be quite welcome. Out of the 26 themes, 16 are bonus tracks (obviously) sung by...guess who? BINGO!!! These songs are very popular, such as "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Summertime" or "The Man I Love".
It seems as if all these recordings have been conceived just for Miss Pickens'grandeur. There's no doubt that she sings beautifully, although quite conventionally, as many other artists having the same style and interpreting the same kind of music: romantic, sweet, dated, slow songs, so slow that they become awfully boring. If you're not a Jane Pickens fan, this is not your cup of tea.

Revival cast?,

This review is from: Music in the Air (Kern-Hammerstein) (Audio CD)
One of a number of well known Jerome Kern / Oscar Hammerstein II musicals of the thirties - the original (1932) production of this one had what was a very good run for the time (342 performances) - and, in particular, more than its share of songs that became standards.
In 1951 a revival production ran for only 58 performances, in spite of starring Jane Pickens. The producers of the revival were so disappointed that they didn't bother with a true cast recording - instead an LP came out of Pickens herself singing a selection of the songs - with a recording of the overture and a couple of chorus numbers. This disappeared into the vaults fairly quickly - finally scoring this CD re-release. To bring the CD up to "value for money" length they were apparently unable to find recordings of other songs from the show - and the "bonus" tracks are other, unrelated songs from Jane Pickens' repertoire. The result is mainly of historical interest, frankly. For fans of Jane Pickens, or people who just want everything they can get by Jerome Kern, or us die-hard show music collectors. NOT a true cast recording in any sense.
