Editorial Reviews

Marching bands, folk songs, hymns, sentimental tunes they were all woven together in the mind and music of Charles Ives. He made a living as an insurance executive, but his pieces were as groundbreaking as Stravinsky's or Schoenberg's, and Leonard Bernstein and Michael Tilson Thomas were ardent advocates of them. Those conductors appear as you hear Ives' second and third symphonies; Three Places in New England; New England Holiday; From the Steeples and the Mountains; Robert Browning Overture; Variations in America; The Unanswered Question , and more!

A nice midpriced 3 CD compilation from Sony's Columbia vaults. Most of this collection is from various 1980's recordings and the 1999 Ives: An American Journey conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas previously released as single CDs, so if you already have those earlier CDs with the Concertgebouw, Chicago or San Francsico Symphonies, this will probably be duplication.

There are no tracks from Bernstein as mentioned in the description above. The only non Thomas conducted tracks are 2 tracks, "Robert Browing Overture" and "Fugue from Symphony 4" conducted by Leopold Stowkowski from the mid 1960's with the American Symphony, and Ormandy conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra on the "Variations on America" from 1968 to round out the set.

Nothing from "The Ives: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4 / Hymns" CD from Sony has been used on this set and is a perfect compliment to fill out the collection.

The slim booklet has information with recording venues and dates of all the compositions and a short essay on Ives.

Part of Sony's American Composers series it provides a nice sample of Michael Tilson Thomas conducting Ives with a couple bonus tracks from the Columbia vaults.

At a skimpy 170 minutes of music over 3 CDs it continues Sony's practice of releasing Columbia recordings at a premium and with 70 minutes of unused CD time they easily could have completed most of the 4 albums sampled here.
