5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I have reviewed many musical texts, but this is outstanding. The 3 CD's packed with musical examples make learning classical music a pleasure. Students, teachers, I sure wish I had this one when I was in college.

1.0 out of 5 stars The most boring book I have ever read
This book is very boring, if you must take a class that requires this book make sure you talk to the instructor first. Make sure you can talk to them and still stay awake. The instructor I had while useing this book was a very wired man. It was a very hard class because of the non-english terms that are used in music. This review is from: Music : An Appreciation-Student Brief (Paperback Book Only) (Paperback)
This third brief edition of the bestselling MUSIC: AN APPRECIATION introduces students to the elements of music and then surveys western art music from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Jazz, Rock, Musical theater, and nonwestern music are also covered.

New to This Edition

A new Annotated Instructor's Edition with suggestions for activities and projects, references to recordings, connections between works, ideas for integrating multimedia and videos. New Vocal Music Guides combine the text of the music with marginal notes to point out the relationship between word, music, and story and are included for chant, oratorio, opera, lieder, and the Broadway musical. A greater range of music is discussed with broader, more current coverage of jazz, computer music, rock, music by women composers, and music by African American composers in the classical tradition. Four new sections discuss music and musicians in society from the Baroque period through the Twentieth Century. Greater coverage of Jazz, including new selections from Bessie Smith, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. More world music coverage including a new section on Classical Music Bingen (O Successores), Monteverdi (Orfeo), R. Schumann (Carnaval), Reich (Sextet), Harvey (Ritual Melodies), Bessie Smith (Lost Your Head Blues), Charlie Parker (Bloomdito), Davis (Miles Runs the Voodoo Down), and Rodgers and Hammerstein (Oklahoma!) New recording package for which Kamien himself selected the best available recording for each selection
