Herb is a (free) Master,
By
This review is from: Music for Long Attention Spans (Audio CD)
No reviews of this CD? For shame, for shame. This is a totally free date. Those looking for simple melodies and swing need to close this page now, and move on. Those into free music, music that reaches BEYOND the likes or Ornette Coleman, need to embrace it ASAP. This is a wonderful date, not without some (no doubt unintentional) humor. The opening track has a vocal from Robertson, where he reads a poem (actually a mantra) over the playing. Not usually my thing, but the music is too good to ignore. Apart from that it's free free free, from noise to some of the best trumpet playing outside the jazz mainstream you can imagine. Yes, I love Dave Douglas too, but Douglas simply can't play like Herb, a man who has mastered his instrument to such an extent that he can stretch it, challenge it, take it to new places. Convention goes out the window. You need an open mind, and open ears. But the rewards as too great to ignore. This is music. 21st century music. Long may it live.
