4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful performers, May 21, 2000
This review is from: Music for Bassoon & Piano (Reis) (Audio CD)
Dag Jensen is one of my favorite bassoonists. He has an amazing technique and fabulous control over his sound and expression. His recordings of the Jolivet Concerto, as well and the Koechlin Sonata and Three Pieces are truly some of the best bassoon recordings I have ever encountered (although neither seem to be listen on Amazon anymore!).

This disc is worth the price for the performances of the Hindemith and the Schoeck alone, and the Yun is piece worth investigating after hearing Jensen's performance. However, I would have preferred to hear another major work in the bassoon repertoire on this CD rather than the Schoof Impromptus. Although Jensen has the jazz idiom down (and even goes up to a high G at the end with no trouble at all!) the music seems a bit inconsequential. Perhaps we can get a recording of some American music from him (the Etler and Previn sonatas especially!).

Dag Jensen is one of my favorite bassoonists, and this recording is one of my reasons for that being so. His tone is the basis for my own sound concept in my own development as a bassoonist.

His performance of the Hindemith sonata is simply beautiful, especially in the march of the second movement (he is the only bassoonists, in the five or so recordings I've heard, to get the style just right). His Yun "Monolog", a work that I have studied and can tell you is no picnic, is mindblowing and the perfection of the intonation is almost unnerving.

Not exactly a cheap album, I know, but well worth it.
