trance-inducing, but not for everyone,

I really like this cd; my wife hates it. At first listen, it might sound like a tape loop that Hart lazily repeats for an hour or so. On closer listening, you hear the slight differences between one measure and another. The basic beat is a recording of Hart's son while he was still in the womb, so it's regular, but not mechanical.

A Real Life Saver!!!,

We got this album before our son was born, and I practiced deep relaxation with it, planning to bring it to the hospital to play during labor. While we decided not to haul the CD player in with all the rest of our things, we did take it with us in the car after he was born, and it turned out to be a real life saver! Whenever our son had trouble sleeping, we found that taking him for a drive always helped. So we would put him in the car, and put on Music To Be Born By, and go for a drive while he slept, and we also got a chance to relax and recuperate. It's very meditative, like trance music, and after a while you don't hear it so much as feel it relax you as it relaxes the baby and puts him to sleep. And whenever he was fussy, we would put it on and he would stop crying and settle right down, like magic. It works like a charm - I can't tell you how many times we were grateful we had bought this CD! We recommend it to every new parent!

The Soundtrack to Life,

I recommend this music for anyone who is birthing a child. Both of our children where born to this music. We played it during both pregnancies and both births. Our children love this! We used to play it to get them calm for sleep every night when they were babies. Taro's pulse warms our hearts and home. It is wholly familiar to the spirit of a child. This music will help you create a loving place in which to grow your family. I thank Taro, Micky and Mary Halloway-Hart for sharing such a wonderful piece of artwork with us all. It is deeply personal. It can allow you to relax your mind so that you can hear the life within you! Enjoy!

This is the music for the unborn child, being born and newly born. Mom's and Dad's will love to watch your child listening to it. I played it during my pregnancy, for relaxation, during my labor and to my daughter for comfort even now at 2 years, when she needs to simply breathe.

Beautiful Concept...A Bit Repitious.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Music to Be Born By (Audio CD)
Like the title my review suggests, Mickey Hart/Taro Hart's concept CD, Music To Be Born By, does good in concept but the piece is a bit redundant or repitious. It has a nice melody against Taro's fetal heartbeat and Mickey's lite percussive rhythm, but it doesn't go anywhere as a change in tune - it is just continuous. The CD is a nice relaxer for about 10-20 minutes. After that it gets boring. Maybe if I was in labor I would understand the premise more clearly. Bottom line, it needed a bit of variation on the tune - not the rhythm. A fair job by Mickey & Co.

20 years ago I heard an interview with Mickey Hart on NPR. He had wanted to compose a piece of music for his pregnant wife and their unborn child. He based it on her heartbeat. They played it through the pregnancy and again during the birth and afterwards. From then on when their son would go ballistic, or cranky or teething or not want to go to sleep, they would put on the music. Within miniutes their son chilled and became a human once again. Their son was about 4 when tthe interview happened and the interviewer asked the son what his favoite music was. "Music to be born by" came spontaneously. And his second favorite? The Grateful Dead. I sought out the recording (it was only a casette at that time and only through the graces of WGBH) and gave it to friends of mine who were expecting their 2d child. Willow was born to it and heard it before and after. Some three years later they were at our house visiting and Willow started becoming a real terror. Without anyone noticing I went to the music system and switched the music to Music to be Born by. Within 4-5 minutes Willow had calmed down and was a wonderful golden child again. What a gift -- a sound mandala to ease the transition into this chaos! It works. I just bought it again for another couple who are expecting their first.

Our second son was born to this (cassette) 17 years ago. He has been a drummer since he was 8 years old - he's amazing!
Our first son was born to Dead music too, before this came out. He's also a musician. This is a wonderful addition to the already wonderful experience!

My daughter loves this,

My daughter is six months old and has been sleeping through the night since she was six weeks. She goes to sleep to this every evening. It's particularly soothing when we're on an overnight and she's sleeping away from her usual crib.

This is a piece of magic. Play it at low volume anytime you want to relax,it's almost a narcotic. It will calm rowdy children (and adults).

When I went into labor with our son, my mom made the 6 hour drive to be there. She brought along an old old tape from my parents' collection-Music To Be Born By. Fortunately, my midwife's stereo had a tape deck! We played it for hours and hours as I labored. I have to say that it's very subtle, and most of the time, I wasn't aware of it playing. It just blended into everything that was going on for me. I really liked it because it was relaxing but did not distract. Afterward, my midwife commented on how much she liked it, so I ordered the CD as a thank-you gift for her.
