I have BEEN to Rita Ford's Music Box Emporium in New York City, and can personally testify that these are REAL, antique music boxes. Most of them are quite large; the Regina is about table-top sized, and some (such as the Polyphon) can be the size of a large refrigerator or china cabinet(!). Due to such monstrous sizes, real range of pitch is possible. Anyone who labors under the unfortunate misconception that all music boxes must be High-&-Tinkly need only to listen to this album to be permanently cured of it -- particularly in the case of "O Sanctissima", near the end of which occurs a note so low that it is almost (but fortunately not quite) unmusical! (Play it, you'll hear what I mean.) My personal favorites among these pieces are: "Spin, Spin", "Ihr Kinderlein Kommet (O Come Little Children)", "O Sanctissima", "Jesus Lover Of My Soul", and of course, "Stille Nacht (Silent Night)". Christmas Is Come! :)

This record has been played in my husband's family every year at Christmas since he was little. When I was introduced to it, it instantly had the same effect on me. It says "Christmas" like nothing else! Since the record is in bad shape I was delighted to find it now on CD. The tradition can continue!

I remember when I was child growing up on this music and I still like to listen to it today at 40!!! It is a fabulous collection of time-honored tunes and is well-presented and not real easy to find. Anyone who likes reflective quality holiday music should absolutely love this, it's great!!

If you grew up in the decade before 1968, this album would have been well known in American homes.

My late-father played this over and over ever year in December and I am forever grateful.

Cathy and I were headed toward the exit after a winter's day at Disneyland when the first notes of "A Music Box Christmas" began floating over Main Street USA. We stopped and listened because we have the CD at home. When the music continued on to the second track, we bought steaming mugs of hot chocolate from the Hills Brothers counter, found a bench facing the big Christmas tree and sat through the entire CD.

It was late when we arrived home but I stayed up, put on the CD and out of curiosity, I Googled "rita ford music box". The Manhattan store has closed and the business has become an online music box dealer.

"A Music Box Christmas" comes from a more adventurous era in the world of recorded music. Columbia Records' sound engineers in the 1960s were the equal of their German counterparts at Deutsche Grammophon, determined to capture each note in its true dynamic range. Maybe there is and maybe there isn't a brand-spankin' new digital recording of these music boxes, but once you hear them on this CD, nothing else will come close. From those belly-rumbling bass notes to the sparkle of tiny bells, "A Music Box Christmas" delivers it all and even more. You can turn it up and bask in the sound, or turn it down as background music. Every note will still shine through.

As a child, one of my first memories of Christmas was shaking a present and hearing music. Whether you have memories of music boxes from Christmas, a ballerina jewelry box from Childhood (where you opened the box and the ballerina spun around as music played) or you found yourself in a magical music box store, this creates the music box mood. The authentic sounds are created by real music boxes which makes this a unique find! This CD transports me back to my childhood and is perfect for the holiday season. A wonderful scented L'Occitane Winter Forest Candle also seems essential or you can play this while decorating the Christmas tree or wrapping presents. The magic of music boxes comes through perfectly and this CD takes you to the place where Christmas dreams are born.

This is my all-time favorite Christmas music. I have listened to this recording since I was a little girl and my family had the album! Nothing evokes the essence of Christmas to me like these sweet music box melodies.
