Product Description

Original music for kids and their families filled with story-like lyrics, distinctive characters, and an indie folk-rock sound. Selected as one of Cool Mom Picks best kids' albums of 2009, Winner 2009 Parents' Choice Recommended Award, Winner 2009 Dr. Toy Best Play and Learn Vacation Products Award, Winner 2009 Creative Child Magazine's Preferred Choice Award.

Children's music performer Mary Kaye offers twelve original songs that capture children's experience and imagination. In her slightly quirky style, her kid friendly voice has no pretension or affectations; her approach and her premise are child-like, not childish. Both her songs and her performance remind one of the nature based, early works of Buffy Sainte Marie, Donovan, and the Incredible String Band. Songs such as the playful Bug, the delicate Red Cardinal and the beautiful Sea Water embody a timeless quality and seem right in tune with the innocence and sense of wonder of childhood. Mary Kaye sings, plays guitar and wrote all the tracks; she is joined by Dave D'Aran on bass, keyboards and electric guitar, Andrew Beale on drums, and percussion, and the very tuneful kids of Mrs. Trite's third grade class at Central Elementary School contributed backing vocals on three of the songs. --Lahri Bond, Parents' Choice 2009

Children's singer/songwriter Mary Kaye's latest venture is filled with fantastic lyrics and vocals that balance between folk and alt rock stylings. Kaye infuses songs such as Bug, a tune about a bug that is captured in the house, taken outside, and set free, with a contagious melody that will have listeners singing along. Fun songs such as Hot Chocolate Fairy and Tasting Tea are among the12 songs that frequently feature a children's chorus that greatly enhances the pieces. Often the lyrics feel like poetry that is set to music as in Sea Water, which features delightful word play. Kaye's powerful voice drives the beat on songs such as Family, but never overpowers the musicians or chorus. Sure to be a hit with parents and children, this collection would be a welcome addition to children's music collections. --School Library Journal, December 2009

According to Maine singer and songwriter Mary Kaye, the world is a great big music box of sound. This CD, though just under 30 minutes in length, is full of sounds, short and poppy and long and wobbly. In Tasting Tea, Turtley Turtleloo, and Hobbly Dobbly House, for example, Kaye enthusiastically repeats syllables and tries out outlandish rhymes. Other tunes are equally fanciful, featuring characters in Hot Chocolate Fairy and Robbie Robot or sketching the attractions of Sea Water and Sleepy Land...for those in the mood, this collection of a dozen sweet and charming songs goes down easy. --Booklist, November 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for all ages July 18, 2009
Format:Audio CD
I play this CD before, during and after my classes and my students love it! The lyrics are great stories and the voice of Mary Kaye is perfect - pleasant, and folk-like. This CD is a must for long car rides because each song is like a story, which keeps the attention of children. Love Mary Kaye's music!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great CD August 27, 2009
Format:Audio CD
I love to find a kid's music CD that I can enjoy too, and this is one of those really good ones. The music is diverse, fun, catchy, quirky, and kids immediately love it. But there is so much more than that. The lyrics are really clever: "She's the hot chocolate fairy - when the month is January she's skis down from her very lovely cocoa mountaintop. She arrives with lots to carry, cups and saucers, chocolate dairy, and of course, it's necessary to put marshmallows on top." I love that. Another song says "The wind smells like watermelon, watermelon, in the sleepy land... the plants they all wear pajamas..." You should get this album for your kids just for the Bug song alone; it's impossible not to love it because it captures exactly how a child--and the bug-- feel about their encounter (and it's great fun to sing). But my absolute favorite is the song about the red cardinal. If you are trying to awaken in your kids an awareness of the simple, breathtakingly beautiful things that we can see each day--if we just take notice--then this is the song that can do it. I can't think of any other piece of children's music that can do that. Quite special.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful CD! October 3, 2009
Format:MP3 Music
Our new favorite is this beautiful CD by Mary Kaye. It is designed for young audiences, but it speaks to all ages. It has the whole family chanting "I'm a Bug!Bug! Bug! Bug! Bug!" And laughing at "My Mom says GET IT OUT!" My own personal favorite is the song about the Hot Chocolate Fairy. With winter coming, it evokes the warmth and comfort of home on a cold winter day. What we love most about Mary Kaye's singing is its unpretentiousness and sincerity. The voices of the children are delightful. They sound as if they are enjoying Mary's songs and can't help but sing along with her. I hope we will continue to enjoy more songs by this talented and charming musician who understands her audience and sings to them from her heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Voice! Big Talent! August 11, 2009
By Mort
Format:Audio CD
What a creative and fun CD! Mary Kaye has a real knack for understanding kids and creating musical worlds. I live by the ocean, and I love the song called "Sea Water." I especially like the lines, "Some salt I once brought her...she wanted more." And "Sea water-Sea water when I see her she waves and she waves and she waves." Love the song about "Family" and the interesting "Hobbly Dobbly House." Mary Kaye has a gorgeous voice that is fun to listen to over and over again. If you have kids...or need a gift for kids, Music Box is an excellent choice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Voice July 29, 2009
Format:Audio CD
Mary Kaye is a great performer and it shows on this CD. I suppose we have to add she performs great music for kids, as it looks like this is who she's aiming at, but her powerful voice works great on me. There's a depth to her voice. But it works on my kids, too. I've heard my son singing along - even when the music isn't playing. He gets the groove. I highly recommend you get this CD for you and your kids. Terrific!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! July 9, 2009
Format:Audio CD
My kids and I love this CD! My 10-year-old daughter's favorite song is the turtle song. She even made a little turtle out of clay after listening to it. My son's favorite song (and mine too) is the Bug song. Once you listen to it, you won't stop singing it! Great job, Mary Kaye! We're already looking forward to the next one!
