This review is from: The Music of Brahms (Clarendon Paperbacks) (Paperback)
While researching the music of Brahms during the preparation of program notes in my favorite music library, I concluded that this scholarly tome by Mr. Musgrave was an indispensable source alongside the excellent book on Brahms by Malcolm MacDonald (which focuses much more on biography, but also gives fine analyses even while being more accessible to the layman). If Brahms is one of your passions and you wish to understand his music better, these two paperback editions are worthy investments for your own home library. I would think that a scholar and serious music student needs to have both at their side, and others may prefer MacDonald. Compare and enjoy!

A must for lovers of Brahms,
This review is from: The Music of Brahms (Clarendon Paperbacks) (Paperback)
This book should be in the library of everyone who appreciates the music of Brahms. It deals succinctly and authoritatively with all of the various forms in which Brahms composed, and broadens one's understanding of individual works.
