Not A Fan Of The Show?,
By Max Fisher "Max" (SLC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Music From the O.C. Mix 1 (Audio CD)
This is such a great compilation. Even if you are not a fan of the show, it's hard not to like the music from it. Seriously, the show is great, but I didn't watch every episode... but yet, the songs all mean something special. If you are a fan of one of the bands on this album I highly recomend getting this cd because the other bands and artists are just as good. Here is a basic review of each song:1) Paint The Silence 9/10 - Great Song To start the album with and a beautiful musical composition. 2) Just A Ride 8/10 - Cool song. Her voice goes great with the beat of the song. 3) Honey And The Moon 10/10 - Awesome song with really really good vocals and a great sound. 4) The Way We Get By 10/10 - This is actually one of the main reasons I bought this cd, it's a really cool and catchy song. Spoon is a really great band. 5) Move On 8/10 - Great Jet Song to put on the soundtrack. 6) How Good Can It Be 8/10 - Cool and Catchy song, sometimes it can be skipped though. 7) Caught By The River 10/10 - Beautiful song by The Doves with really good lyrics and an awesome sound. 8) Rain City 10/10 - This is one of my favorite songs on the cd. It's slow, but it's so good. 9) We Used To Be Friends 10/10 - This song is great and it really conveys the thoughts of being annoyed with old girlfriends. 10) Dice 15/10 - This is such a great song and probably my favorite song on the cd. The lyrics and different sound make it a terrific song. 11) Orange Sky 9/10 - Great Mellow song, the lyrics make the song. 12) California 10/10 - Probably why most people will buy this cd.. You can't help but like this song, it's great. Check out Phantom Planet's "The Guest" - it's an awesome cd. - Another reason to get this cd is it's cool to see the clips from the show when the songs were used by putting it in your computer.

Amazing Mix Can't Wait For More!,
By Brittany Rose (Winnipeg, MB) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Music From the O.C. Mix 1 (Audio CD)
Everyone loves the OC, so in order to keep up its super pop culture icon status, they decided to release a series of soundtracks right? Well if you were to watch the OC and buy the soundtrack, you will be pleasantly surprised. ANd if you were to listen to the soundtrack and then watch the OC you will be absolutely delighted!A really neat feature on this disc is the fact that when you pop it into your computer it will link you to a special site that has clips of where each song was used. While some of the scenes are a bit more obscure (Seth and Ryan at the lobster tank) others are defining moments of the show, like the fantastic inclusion of "Paint the Silence" by South which played during Marissa and Ryan's first kiss. Other priceless soundtrack moments include when Ryan's mother left to "Move On" by Jen, and a number of slower tunes devoted to events where Ryan leaves, from the sweet acoustics of "Honey and the Moon" when he is going back to Chino, to the amazing yet simple "Orange Sky" ballad by Alexi Murdoch. While Jem's "Just A Ride" doesn't have an included video clip it was played on a recent episode in Summer's room in a scene with Seth and Summer, and stands on its own as a catchy indie pop track. Some of the other upbeat tracks include Spoon's "The Way We Get By", "How Good Can It Be" by The 88 and "We Used To Be Friends" by the Dandy Warhols, but all of these are still at their own unique tempo that they can't distincly be considered a particular style. A number of other songs are really melodic and beautiful, including "Caught by the River" and the enigmatic "Rain City" with a really unique lead vocalist. A personal fave of mine on the album is Finley Quayes excellent track "Dice" with the help of William Orbit mixmaster. You might recall this songp laying when Marissa and Ryan just make a midnight kiss on new years in the last few seconds. The album is perhaps best ended by the incredibly infectious and catchy "California" theme song by pop-punk group Phantom Planet known for their laid-back approach to music. It sums up the album as a whole; well mixed, very catchy and melodic, reminsicent of the scenery they are being played in, and most importantly, inspires memories of the OC from start to finish.

Every song is great... excellent mix,

Okay, I'm a fan of the show, but after previewing the songs I didn't think I'd be interested. Someone got this for me as a gift, though, and after I listened to the full CD a couple of times, it's permanently in my CD changer in my car. Also good enough that when "The O.C. Mix 2" came out, it was a priority for me to go buy it.
I think Josh Schwartz, the creator and producer of the series, picked the music. Evidently, he has very eclectic taste--there's a wide range of musical styles represented, but man, this whole album just flows... it's mostly mid-to-downtempo stuff. Totally feels like something you'd want to listen to driving up Hwy. 1 or walking on the beach at sunset. Some highlights for me are "Dice" by Finley Quaye and William Orbit, Joseph Arthur "Honey and the Moon," and Jem's "Just a Ride." Don't be surprised if you end up buying some full albums from some of these artists after you listen to this--and you will... again, and again, and again...

Wonderful Surprise!,

Well, let me start off by typing that I'm not a die-hard-core fan of "The O.C.", but I have seen most of the first season. And like everybody else with ears and good taste, I've noticed the great music on the show. (Along with Adam, Chris, and Ben, those hottie boombalotties!) This soundtrack is such a great mix of artists, styles, & songs. I thought there would be at least a few filler songs, but EVERY SINGLE SONG IS AWESOME!! My personal fav is "We Used To Be Friends" by The Dandy Warhols! It's so fun and funny and rockin and cool. Anyway, the opening song "Paint the Silence" by South is a beautiful song that has a great instrumental break in the middle of the song. Just very enjoyable. Then, we have "Just A Ride" by Jem, who sounds a lot like Dido, but cooler. Jem's voice is very clear and lovely and the song is enhanced by that fact. Very nice indeed. Next, it's "Honey and the Moon" by Joseph Arthur, who has a great, smoky, I've been drinking a little kinda voice. A very beautiful song about love, of course. Then, another one of my favourites, "The Way We Get By" by Spoon. A great pop-rock kinda song about teens just bein' them crazy selves and gettin' into some trouble and havin' fun. Great song. Love the piano playin' in it. Then, "Move On" by Jet, which is a nice stripped-down kinda song. Sounds good! Then, a song that's a lot like the Spoon song, "How Good It Can Be" by The 88. A great sing-along-song, for sure. Then, a very beautiful and slightly dramatic (in a good way) song called "Caught By The River" by Doves. Just a really wonderful song. "Rain City" by Turin Brakes is lovely and pretty. Then, of course, my fav "We Used To Be Friends" by The (fantastic) Dandy Warhols. Kinda has an 80's dance vibe and it's soooo much fun. Love it! Then, another one of my favs "Dice" by Finley Quaye and William Orbit, featuring the beautiful voice of Beth Orton. Just an incredibly beautiful song and I especially love the opening minute. This song has a very trancey vibe. Then, "Orange Sky" by Alexi Murdoch which is a beautiful song with lyrics that could be a little misinterpreted. Whatever. Then, the most recognizable song and theme song for the show, "California" by Phantom Planet. I like this song, the piano playing and drumming are cool, but it's my least favourite out of all the songs. Still good, though. This is just a really awesome and wonderful soundtrack that you should go buy now!

I absolutely LOVED this CD. I previewed it at first and didn't think it would be that great, but after I actually listened to all the songs, I fell in love.

Honey and the Moon - one of the best songs, haunting melody, absolutely beautiful. 5/5 4. The Way We Get By - so upbeat, fun to listen to, can be a little repetitive. 4/5 5. Move On - acoustic sounding, wonderful lyrics. 4/5 6. How Good it Can Be - cute music, bouncy, lots of clapping. 4/5 7. Caught By the River - one of the best songs, great guitar music in the background, wonderful chorus. 5/5 8. Rain City - another one of the best songs, gorgeous, takes you back to the scene in The O.C. where this was played. 5/5 9. We Used to Be Friends - awesome beat, great lyrics. 5/5 10. Dice - beautiful song, wonderful lyrics, fabulous overall. 5/5 11. Orange Sky - short, but awesome. 4/5 12. California - theme song, perfect for the show. 5/5 Overall, I give this CD 55/60. Most of these reviews comment on how amazing the tv show is, and how if you looove the tv show you will love the cd. I would just like to say (and yes, I am a huge OC fan, but that is not the point) that this is a great all around cd regardless of the show it is affiliated with. I am a fan of artists such as Dispatch, Jack Johnson, DMB and OAR. If you like chill, easy to listen to indie music you will enjoy this cd. It introduced me to many more wonderful artists whom I would otherwise not have known. Favorite songs include: Just a Ride, Orange Sky and The Way We Get By.

This is the best soundtrack EVER,

'California here we come...' Everyone knows how it goes. 'California' by Phantom Planet - the theme for the O.C. is on this album and yes it is a brilliant song in full and yes it is one of my favourites but it is not the best song on the album. There are so many different genres on this that it appeals to everyone- The Dandy Warhols 'We used to be friends' for those who like indie rock, 'Dice' by Finlay Quay&William Orbit for the love song fans and 'Move On' by Jet and Turin Brakes' 'Rain City' for anyone who has ever enjoyed music. It's hard to stop myself from listing the entire play list from the album and saying how good all of the songs are.
I actually can't say a single negative thing about this album. It doesn't matter what kind of music you're into you will love this album. No CD collection is complete without it!

I tend to buy, and judge, compilation albums on what I can learn from them. If there are a few bands I've heard of, and the rest is new I'll see potential for introductions to new things. I bought this album as a guilty pleasure, not expecting too much.
It's provided ample opportunity to wander through previously uncharted territory, not just stopping at those on the album but similar bands. It is clear that the people who put this compilation together know exactly what they are doing. The compilation works as a whole, having something that caters for most emotions but not feeeling disjointed. With each listen, I notice different songs depending on my mood. Joseph Arthur and Alexi Murdoch, in particular, offered some excellent songs. I have bought a few albums of the artists on the compilation, and discovered more artists through those albums, like Eastmountainsouth (Peter Adams plays on Alexi Murdoch's EP). What began as a guilty pleasure has opened up a range of music, some of which hasn't had much (if any) UK release. Perhaps they are better known in America but a lot had the feel of undiscovered gems (Murdoch's was a debut). The Australians, Jet, may have been new to many, and Joseph Arthur, on the British Realworld label at the time, too. The more known bands, such as Finley Quaye and William Orbit, or Eels had lesser known tracks, so the whole thing was an accessible, uplifting and very interesting experience. I think many people wouldn't have expected such a mainstream TV show to unearth so much interesting music and provoke interest beyond the bands on the compliation but they clearly know they're onto a good thing, since another two have been released. I hope this isn't overkill but so far very good. A great introduction to new music for me, and the ride is still going.

The O.C. Mix 1 is one of my all time favourite CDs. I love it. It has introduced me to a whole lot of bands and singers which I now adore, such as Doves and Joseph Arthur. Because it's such a varied combination of songs and sounds, I never got bored of it and won't. It's definately a stand out compilation and all the songs just seem to fit together.
My favourite songs on this CD were 'Honey and the Moon','Orange Sky'and 'Dice'. If you liked this CD check out The O.C. Mix 2 and the Garden State Soundtrack or The Killers, Doves and Joseph Arthur. Song wise: 1. Paint the Silence - 9/10. I love the lyrics and the beat. 2. Just a Ride - 7.5/10. Jem's voice is a gem. However, average compared to the other songs. 3. Honey and the Moon - 10/10. Love it. Stand Out. Get his album - it's great to just listen to and chill out. 4. The Way We Get By - 8/10. Fun little song. Compared to other songs like it, it's way better. 5. Move On - 7/10. Slower, good lyrics. But yeh compared to the other songs, it's ok. Kind of annoyed me after a while. 6. How Good It Can Be - 8/10. Cool song. It's catchy and fun. 7. Caught By The River - 9/10. I love the beat and i love this band. 8. Rain City - 9.5/10. This song is one of the best slower songs (if you could call it that)around. I love his voice and the lyrics. 9. We Used To Be Friends - 8.5/10. Original and fun. 10. Dice - 15/10. It's too bad Finley and William didn't do an album together becoz this song, to me, is perfect. 11. Orange Sky - 10/10. Love this song. Love the guitar. Sounds soo good. 12. California - for a theme song, it suites the show well, other than that, definately overplayed but nevertheless, good.
